Hi tigers,
All my test failed and I sadly gave up on my homemade toxins free antifoul paint. I just don't have enough resources and money to keep going further..
now current paint on my boat is Altex 5 and I must say it's not that bad. Why? I think I was not enough on the boat. Gladesville bridge marina done only one single coat. That is sad. Otherwise I think it's not that bad especially if done in 3 cotes as recommended. mall I want us to manage to get 18 month li of the paint. Vivid? Caroline 3000? Altex 5?
what works best here in harbour. I would love to buy Japanese toxic free Nippon paint and wondering if anybody has tried that one?
any suggestions are welcome. I am not going to add copper dust and copper oxy chloride in my paint or antibiotics it's just not fair, I love my nature and can not do things like this. If I must go with toxic paints what would be the best opinion to get 18 months out of it. Boat is moving at least twice weekly at 5 knots sometimes 6 if lucky. Woolwich dock people recommended vivid from Pettit. Internet is full of paint: micron, vivid, triton, bottomkote, seajet and so on. One just can not know where to start. All I know is what ever paint I get, I will apply 3 cotes and an extra cote on a rudder. the cheapest 4L of the red paint is Caroline 3000 around 200 bucks. Hopefully 26 f boat will be covered by 4L in 3 cotes.
Any suggestions welcomed my friends.
Thank you
It's all going to depend on how clean the surface is before you start rolling on the antifoul. 4 litres on a fin keel 30 footer will be enough for two good coats with a roller. Put on a first coat and then double up on the leading edges. Put on the second coat and double up on the leading edges again and keep going till the paint is used up. When rolling the paint avoid going back over it, apply the paint as thick as possible. 8mm short nap roller and use a double handle alloy extendable roller for the job.
I suggest you try rolling the paint on without an extension handle ,, I found the handle awkward and without it ,,, It was easier and I did a better job. Unless of course you cannot reach what you are painting as that is what the handles are for.
I find a double handed roller is easier to control. A fully loaded roller with antifoul is heavy on the wrist.

Cool, but what paint to use? Any success with Vivid paint? Currently Altex 5 is weak on my boat and I can not judge but I have feeling that if applied in 3 cotes it will work better. Interestingly sun is mostly getting to the port side of the Tasman and that side has seen some barnacles. It looks like they like sun. That is the reason I would like to try another paint this time.
I have a friend who only uses Caroline 3000 and it will never use anything else. He is adding **** lot of chilly powder in it. It works well for him. On my testing samples chilli powder didn't do much at all. Staff member of Woolwich dock doesn't want to hear about Altex 5 and only talks about vivid from Pettit. Ex girlfriend lives in Florida and she sad that vivid is a failure and that she had the best results with Trinidad 75. I just don't know what to do! It could be a water temperature that makes vivid paint a failure over there otherwise I don't see any reason why would Woolwich dock staff recommend vivid paint if does not produce any good outcomes here around Sydney harbour. I am tempted to apply that Trinidad 75.
Any experience with Vivid paint from company called Pettit or with the paint called Trinidad 75? Which one protects better against s barnacles? Did you get 18 months out of the of it? I wish I tested the samples but it is impossible to get small amounts of each paint for testing. This should be done somehow because many people could possibly benefit from it.
Thank you.

Excellent. How many cotes have you applied and was 4 L of paint sufficient?
Thank you for your help.
My mate used Pettit Vivid and it's holding up fine. I tried to buy it in 10 litres but could not get it so I bought Altex 5+. You will note that Pettit Vivid is now owned and made by the same company that makes Altex. Altex is the yachtie label for Resene Devoe ABC3. which I used for a few years on my fishing vessel. It's made by a multi national company that owns a lot of paint companies.
Got 4L of International micron extra 2 for 289 bucks at Withworts. 61% of copper. Thinking of increasing the copper content to 70%. That should last 18 months. I will compare the current Altex 5 with international micron extra 2 (added 300g of copper dust) and let you know in 12 months.
if Teflon powder is not that expensive (100 bucks a kilo) it would be easy to make an excellent paint but is just not worth when you can get 4L of an excellent paint for 300 bucks..

I only use International Micron Extra 2 on my boat and get at least 2 years protection from it, After this amount of time, there is very little growth. Here in SA, we don't get a lot of barnacle growth you are currently experiencing in NSW. 4 litres will cover 3 coats to my 29 footer.
I would suggest not to mix anything with it. From my results, it doesn't need it.
Cheers

Thank you so very much for your post. 2 years is a very good result. If I can get two years out of it I would be so glad..
