I was sitting here thinking that top foresail is flapping. Look at the bloke trying to sheet the main.

It is SO easy to be an armchair sailor, (fun too)
In the original Youtube post, some posters got quite nasty about weather helm and whatever.
Also the speed.
One poster timed the speed of passing her own waterline length and came up with 10 to 11 knots.
Not bad for an old girl (am I allowed to say that?)

She is doing hull speed. I reckon 6 to 7 knots. What is the waterline length?

Yes, the mechanical advantage on the main sheet is not much more than what I have on my puny main. Guess the only way they can tighten that massive main is to luff up. (Or have the whole crew pull on the main sheet.)
Before winches handy Billy's ( a separate block and tackle arrangement ) where used to apply more pull, but that Ol girl didn't want to be sheeted any harder,

Not so much of the old please, she is still a teenager at only seventeen years old
And much admired Mega.
I have great respect for the custodians of these high maintenance boats.
83 or 17, they still need so much time, effort and cash.

Funny, I thought the weather helm wasn't too bad considering.
It still looked like he could helm one handed at least some of the time, and the tiller was only up a couple of degrees Im guessing from the comfort of the recliner.
For a 46ft boat then, tiller steered, with a boom longer than out trailer sailer, i'd call that good going.
A dumb question then for the armchairers, if it has weather helm, meaning the gaff main is doing too much, why try to get it in tighter?
Unless they are looking to depower it by oversheeting?
I know nothing anymore, normal sailing rules seem to dissappear after sailing the cat.
Everything is apparent wind and steering to depower goes against what you grew up with.

It all looked really good to me. Everything drawing nicely. Maybe they wanted to point up a bit?
I don't set a top sail so not sure how much that affects things. My boat likes to point off a bit and the boom no more than on the quarter. Too tight and it all goes to hell in a hand basket. The sails are probably 30 years old so I really need at least a new main.
Agnes is a great boat and one day when we can travel again I want to sail on her. I think she does voyages...or at least one of the pilot cutters does.

Mega I replaced my 34 year old sails a couple of years ago and it improved the ability to point but bringing the boom inboard gives the same result.
