I think that's Aldinga or Silver Sands. In summer it packed with 2 rows of cars for the entire beach. You'd need really really good brakes!

Haha, True. Its a very popular beach as the urban sprawl has spread to that area now. Even in winter you'd get a lot of joggers and dog walkers. I'd consider taking a mini or blokart there then, but not a class 5. AS its a beach you can drive on, I think there's a 15kph speed limit.

When I was a teenager a mate of mine had a beach house there and we used to spend school holidays there, now its just the outskirts of suburbia. That was the beach I first sailed my radio controlled landyacht about 30 years ago. Even that was a bit risky as I nearly took out someone's ankles.

This is a better example of what the beach looks like most weekends in summer.
Its now regarded as a metro beach with VERY strict acess rules, so Landsailing is out of the question......



During other times of the year it is blocked off from traffic as it is the breeding ground for the rare "Hooded Plover"

The coastal bird, which lives between Maslin Beach and Port Willunga, has less than 30 nesting pairs left on the Fleurieu Peninsula.
Natural Resources Management Board (NRM) coast, estuary and marine officer Emma Stephens, who is leading the strategy, said breeding season from August to March coincided with the busiest times on the beach.
“The birds have a very low breeding success rate because they have a number of natural, human and pest-related threats,”.
“High tides, storms, dogs, other birds, foxes and people can destroy their eggs.”
Hooded Plovers nest between the high-water mark and the base of sand dunes along beaches, which gives them access to food and a view of approaching threats.
NRM coast and marine manager Tony Flaherty said the birds’ grey and brown speckled eggs were difficult to see and could be “easily trodden on by mistake”.
“People or dogs can scare the parents away from their nests,” Mr Flaherty said.
“That means eggs and chicks can be left unprotected and vulnerable to the elements and natural predator attacks.”
In SA, the Hooded Plover is listed as vulnerable under the National Parks and Wildlife Act. Nationally, they are close to extinction.

hi people, yes thats aldinga beach i had just recently approached the local council that cotrols this beach for permmission to sail on there from time to time on behalf of the Adelaide Land Yacht Club as i am trying to scout out places to sail other than Port Gawler but the reply was a very firm no.....i even reminded then that i days past the same beach was used for flat track motor cycle racing but as i was reminded that was many years ago when there were less people there..........already tried and failed, seems like the doggy walkers are more important.. i also approached sa water for permission to sail on a couple of the salt pans just out of Port Agusta bt again due to the fact that it could be and i repeat could be a sacred site for australian natives the reply i got from them was another big no way,,,, there are however a couple of clay pans with public access just out of port augusta that i intend to sail very soon as well as a place about 3 hours north of adelaide on the main road to broken hill which will be worth a look at,,,,down south i guess there's always goolwa beach down away from the main area and now that lake alexandrina is almost dry i have noticed a couple of spots on the lake that blow dust when the wind blows but to gain entry to this area is through private land and i haven't as yet approach the owners to so if it is possilbe to go in there...it seems to me that finding places to sail is easy but getting permission is the hard part unless you want to travel for hours and hours away from it all.....one place that seems keen to have land sailing on their beach is port gremain up near port pirie, it seems that they are holding a kind of wind festival this year and have asked if anyone would like to put on a land sailing demonstration during the festival, that could be something to look forward to later in the year.......I don't know what anyone else on here thinks but if we don't get out and start to promote this sport a bit it's going to just die of old age and fade away....tony

yes i have been up there recently well with in the past year and i drove my 4wd ute out onto the beach near the golf club with out to much trouble the beach is almost 20 k's long from the jetty to down near the island i'm sure that some of it would be sailable,,, i travel to port augusta regularly to visit family and stop in at port gremain for a rest break and the beach nearly always seems ok to me......i fail to understand why people find the need to look at the negative side of things,, if someone doesn't feel that the trip would be worth the effort then don't go, seems simple enough to me,,one thing is true if there was a no show that would indeed be bad for land sailing but even if we couldn't sail i would have thought that it would have been worth the trip just to put up some sort of display and to perhaps answer any questions that the public might ask,,, is it not better to be there even if you can't sail than not be there at all.???? anyway as far as i'm concerned i would go up a few weeks before the event and scope out the beach condition at the time for my self so at least i knew that it was going to be like....

Back in the time when Noah was full back for Jeruiselum a member of thew ALYC fraquented Aldinga beach and caused a certain amount of trouble so if any council members are still in office and remember you will have no luck even if you can ban the masses.
Many years ago, after Mosses retired, a group of us went to Pt Gemein and one of our group was chatting with the local plod ..who he went to school with.. and discovered she owned a landyacht herself so at that time we were very welcomed so I see no need to think much would have changed and have been there a few times since but yes you need to pick you times wisely Ive seen it in summer as hard as tarmac but also soft sloppy and slippery,They are well know for good winds too.
Also many many years ago the Pt Pirie scout group had a fleet of landyachts they sailed at Germain I had heard
Also it is a great sail to sail from the jetty to the island and return. There is a few obsticles to avoid,the odd soft patch and sharp rocky outcrops, all easy to see when you are looking out for them.. but as mentioned before the beach is 20 klm long so plenty of room to avoid them and plenty of room for big yachts too.
Was a great caravan park too I rigged in the park and walked accross the road and I was off for a sail

Ive also heard tales either way about lake lockeil being sailable again but I dont know for sure Thought about going up for a look a while back but then it rained up there ..a lot so i did not go ,so that shows how long ago that was eh..
