I was having a look around on Google earth and I spotted a huge salt lake near Carnamah in WA. Does anyone know what the surface is like. It is 18k long x 8k wide

The auto salt lake racers have also been looking at this lake as maybe a good place for a event

there is a public looking access point just west of carnamah, that has tracks onto the lake , but no obvious bogs from boguns.
also to the east is mongers lakes, that is accessed from perenjori
when are you going past the area for the warmth Vic

Plug it in you diary Vic , its the only way we'll ever know, local knowledge can be patchy in farming country, as the closest thing to a landyacht they will have will have tyres from a John Deere or Inter
we will be expecting a report.
there is a bitumen access road most of the way to the lake , certainly to the lookout. also a road that goes straight in just south of town and has a track along the lake edge, the salt looks good and thisk , although that doesnt neccessarily equate to hard

There where a few blowies there, they where strugling in the wind to.I think the skinies were not the best fit for light conditions in sand plus a tire that kept going flat every five minute's did not help

Oh well I will try another beach further up.

cheers

Try Landyacht's trick and use some silicone. I am sure that if you use a goodly amount around the stem and assemble before drying, then inflate. I am sure it would last longer perhaps

Pretty much the only ones further north are Bucasia Beach at Mackay, Cape Hillsborough and Conway Beach.

The blokart people have regattas at Hillsborough quite often, their next one being on the weekend of the 20th of October.

If there is any sort of southerly blowing, Conway should be good as it runs east - west. Can be a bit wet though due to the stingray holes.

Very good van park there and if the wind don't blow, plenty of other things to do there. There is a magnificent waterfall in Conway National Park well worth a visit.

Beyond there I think the only beaches with a chance of sailing (in an east or north east breeze) will be Mission Beach and the beach at Port Douglas. They used to drive tourist buses on the beach there so it should be hard enough.

Whoa! Back up a minute. When you say 'stingray holes' is that really holes made by a stingray?

Cheers Col

Gy Goerge! colk,
Aren't you the clever one then?? You got it in one. Yup! You are right though.. Our Stingrays are after small crustacean, (We have a Yabby species here that live in the sandflats which Stingers are fond of), worms and any other food sources they can get out of the sand or off it for that mater. They tend to use their Flaps to suck stuff out of the sand and in the process can form substantial bowls in the surface of it. Believe me they are not something you'd want to hit at low tide at speed. Sand flats can be left quite Pot Holed after a school of rays pass through when the water is high. I do not know how many types of Rays you guys have up in the UK? We have several types From the "Devil Fish"/ Manta Ray, Angel Ray down to the average little Skate. Some of the Big Rays, I have seen them and Hooked them when fishing, Can get up around 2 to 3 mtrs across the Manta can get quite a bit larger.
