As requested!!!

This is what I'm trying to get organized as acting captain of our local fire brigade.

http://www.esperanceexpress.com.au/news/local/news/general/festival-land-yacht-race/2070217.aspx

I have the sails sewed together. Now I just need to do the heavy stiching .
Onto the masts fitting internal supports. I have the booms made.

We got the ok today to use Pink Lake for the Regatta.

"DEC" said we would be threatening the hooded plovers that lay eggs on the salt flats. They arranged for Birds Australia to do a survey and they couldn't find any there.
The other worry for the Department of Environment and Conservation is the microbiolites. These are the bacterial growths that give the lake its pink colour.
Working with Steve from DEC and the Kath the shire environmental officer, we have identified where they are and have implemented a 50 mtrs exclusion zone to protect these colonies that take 100's of years to grow. They were very sensible about the problem.

Tom the yachts are there to be used, please come along and you are very welcome to have a go.
We are burning a sausage and drinks will be available. Porta loo's have been arranged and it should be a laugh.

Everyone is encouraged to participate and have some fun.

Only catch is, if it rains of course and the surface is soggy.

PS. How did you go with the job Tom?

I forgot.
This was dropped off at my shed, after reading the article in the local paper.
It was built locally by a farming mate (Brian) at Cascade, 9 years ago and has been sitting in his shed unsailed. They built it and it rained and they had to comenced their huge seeding program. It was just forgotten about.

He left it here and said, if you can get it to work, go for it.
I have knocked up a rough sail for it. The fiberglass mast and axles are VERY furry. The frame is all stainless. Axles need some attention. The hubs are just nylon bushes. So more giggles per kilometer!!!!

Chook,
Are you a Rod Builder??
If not this is the way to deal with your Mast and Axles.
A technique used in rod building is to set the Rod sections (1 @ a time) between centers 1 of which is a BBQ Spit Motor the other what ever will serve. After lightly sanding the parts give them a coat of epoxy Clear and keep them turning until the epoxy is set. Use only light coats and if needs must re-coat them. Simple, Sweet and very Neat.
Hey! it is what I would do but you may try something else.

Hi Ron, no not a fisherman at all. I just grow old sitting on the rocks, feeding the buggers.

I like the spit idea and I know where to borrow one from.

The epoxy clear, is that some sort of 2 pack paint????

Chook,
You could probably get away with Esta-pol but there are other two pack out there. If you have some Clear Epoxy from fiber glassing that would seal the parts as well. Perhaps Paul Aus230 or Gizmo could make a suggestion. The Fishing rod version is a thinner form but takes forever to set and at $12 or $14 it is a bit exy.

That kart looks like a very good copy of a blokart to me. Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery!
The Pink Lake can be soft, a big sail and wide wheels are a must. i have sailed on the salt ponds at the north end of the lake, hard and fast! Not so much room but you will get 2 to 3 times the speed, and speeding around is good for spectators and sailors alike.

Hi Bryan I look forward to catching up with you when your down here.

You can have a giggle at our dad and dave behavior.

Be nice to get some tips off you.

Yeh he said it looked close and wasn't wrong there.

Lets hope the rain holds off.
I was out at Wylie bay beach this arvo and snuck in a couple of hours in the kite buggy. First time back in it for 3 months due to my shoulder injury and boy was I rusty. I did 67kms in the light breeze (12 knots gusting to 15) with 6.8 sq mtrs of kite.
Hell I'm pretty sore tonight!!!!!!
Even had a few beers to activate the healing.

Took my "topper" yacht to Rolles Lagoon, out past the Ora Banda pub, on Sunday, on the chance it would have enough water after the recent rains. Lake Lefroy has about 6 inches of water, Rolles lagoon has 6 inches of mud! It can get 2 or 3 metres of water, need a lot more rain yet, but hope for none so Lefroy can dry out by Easter. Either way, got a venue to do some sailing.

Bryan-If you could get there sunrise dam is probably wet enough for you!

there is now a lake behind the camp (past the snakepit) that was estimated at about 2 1/2m deep when I left a couple of days ago.

its even got ducks and a few heron type birds too.
some of the fellas claim to have seen swans, but I reckon they had been in the snakepit too long...

I enquired at the local mobile fiberglassing place in town about the coating and he said bring them in. I dropped them off and he did them the same day at no charge.
How good is that??? I'm wrapped!!!
Now I have all the bearings I've finally got the wheels sorted out.

Repacking the new bearings with marine grease.

Pressing the bearings and retainers in.

Ready to fit to the chassis

Got the brake levers on and used a washer either side of the lever, cut out of black poly pipe (with a wad punch) for a friction washer to keep it in the horizontal position when not being used.
Slowly getting there. I have the end in sight. Well almost!!!!

Well spotted!!!!

It's my 1.5mtr "Whippet" fiberglass hot liner. It needs about 15knots on our slopes here, as it's been decked a few times. The repairs have added weight. Have had it to 192kmh on the radar gun in a straight line, as I'm buggered if I can "dynamic soar" Every time I try, I just spend my time climbing down retrieving it out of the bushes.
My love is slope aerobatics and we have fantastic coastal slopes to fly on. They are 5 mins away by car from home and 52 mtr high above sea level.

I finally got the heavy stiching done today on the sails. Just a few eyelets to put in and they can be assembled. It should happen tomorrow with a bit of luck.

make sure not to put too much grease in those bearings. the amount that is in there is as much as you want. I wash my wheels down after , then blow with air, and then spray with crc after.
after the wheels had a dunk at Cape le grande I washed them 6 hours later and a spray, and only 1 bearing died when it was used.
you should put a bit of light oil or spray on the axle shaft before using each time

Hi, yes Paul I didn't fill mine right up as I want to beat the other buggers!!!

No only enough to lube them properly as it makes a mess otherwise.

I was asked about the brake mount mod and it can be seen in the previous photos. (The one where the axles are on their ends and note to bolt holes in the tube. To get the right position, the bracket is on the rear of the axle, this is for a right hand brake lever.)
It can be seen here.
My horrible mate jumped into this one as he reckoned it matched his shirt!!! More like his bald head!!!!!

Cheers

We just saw the pics of your stable!

looks real good- any testing done yet?

the mast extension you need can be found attached to most vacuum cleaners,

keep us all posted about the test runs

P.S. I have another sail here if you need it (5.9m I think) also might have some spare extensions in the shed too.

do you have anyone able to pick them up?

No sn, not at the moment.

I have found that the aluminium tube that the windsurfer booms are made of, slips beautifully over the tops of 3 of the masts and I made wooden plugs for them. One sail was a pin cap so just drilled a hole in the wood, super glued it in and drowned it in super glue to water proof it. (Red Dot super glue 7 tubes for $2.99 works as well as Loctite Super glue).

Took the fleet out yesterday for a run but there really wasn't enough wind by the time we got them all there and set up.
Got a few good runs anyway.
It sorted out what I had forgotten to do and what is need.
Boom heights that I thought were ok, under working tension ended up being way to low, so longer extentions needed.
I had also cut the sheet ropes too short on a couple of them restricting the sail movement. I just didn't realize that the sail would still generate power that far out the side. Unreal !!!!
A visitor saw us and he had a blokart with a 5.5 mtr sail and even he had to push it back in the gentle wind. The boys were keen and they all looked like they were using big wheel chairs, as they tried to keep them going.
Gota run.
