what kind of budget do you have , as we can advise where new materials for the mast can be had and which Aust. sailmakers have experience in the right sails, or alternatively do you have the ability to recut a windsurfer sail

I emailed Ken O'Brien for a new sail making quote. I can have the one made of Contender R.S. 4 racing dacron sailcloth (white only) , including 5 battens or the cheaper one, a recreational sail in white or coloured cloth (preferred).
But first, I want to build the mast. I have plans for 50mm OD/4900mm mast made of 5 sections, each size-step in 5mm steps on diameter.
Is there any other mast building methods you can suggest to suit this kind - Fed 5?

Nice job. I had one just like that made by Imac NZ. Yours looks a bit long in the nose and narrow in width, or is that just the angle the photo was taken?. Overall length centre to centre of wheels should be 2.5m. Overall width to outside of rear tires should be 2.0m max. Anyway this is a mast design that would be ok for a fed5. Not sure if you have these sizes in Aus.

nice looking job Have a look at the Aluminium discussion in the construction section. The only readily available sizes in T8 is the Capral Aluminium stuff , all 1.6mm wall. distributers in Capital cities. Od ,s are 48,44,and 40mm with T6 40mm od 3mm wall for the lower part of the mast. You would do well to get a Ken O'Brian sail , they last for years and are just plain fantastic

I have read through all forum correspondence (since 2008) regarding aluminium masts....very confusing.
Tried as well to my luck with aluminium tubing catalogs - no success.
Are there any news for the right tubing sizes?
the only T6 on Carpal catalog is the base - OD 48.41x4.47.

the thin walled telescopic stuff is T8 . you will need to email caprals and talk to somebody rather than just catelogs. I tried to find a contact name and email but its been too long.. I looked through thier website, and it seemed to be all bling and no actual usefull stuff

Check this site of " Performance Metals" (all tubes are T6)

http://www.performancemetalsaustralia.com.au/stocklist/6061t6-tube-round
Can I use these telescopic sizes or it will be too bulky and heavy? (4 pieces mast):

OD 47.6 x 1.47 (Internal 44.66)
OD 44.45 x 1.47 (internal 41.51)
OD 41.3 x 1.47 (internal 38.36)
OD 38.1 x 1.47

Perfect

Any suggestion on the length of each size? (I have an old plans for the Fed 5 for a mast. see attached).
Is 4900 long enough or I will need 5200 long mast? (i do not have the sail yet)
Do I need a base stifner or it is strong as it is?

the tolerances are very tight in that range and the wall rather thin for a T6.
keep in mind that this stuff is for building sports car chassis, not for running long unsupported lengths. I would suggest checking the tolerances on the 1.6mm range or even the 2.1mm range.
. the European promo masts are made from a 2mm wall and are almost 5.5m long
