on the way back from Goolwa we stopped in at Pt Germein for a sail and a feed of swimmer crabs. Wow what a fantastic decision that was.
we arrived just before full low tide, to find a great wide dry beach, nearly 700m, that was dry and hard , coupled with a stonking 18-22kns, diagonally across the beach. most of the beach is clean and dry, and the last 200m out to sea has a series of bankswith long shallow pools. the pools can suddenly dissapear, or even join upleaving you no choice but to cross it at speed

there is an occasional rock on the beach they are remnants of the stone ballast dumped by sailing ships when they came to collect a cargo of grain, so it pays to do a slow sail of the area you want to sail on first.
just as I was doing my last run of the day I spotted the bowpost and forward ribs of a rather large wreck right in the middle of the beach.

there was a massive tempation to just sail south into the distance , but I'd like a little local knowledge first, as the beach runs for about 10kms?.
the crabs we caught were soooo tasty, we got 10 on the turn of the tide and that was a great meal for 3 of us.

the caravan park was excellent, clean and friendly, plenty of room to set up the yacht and then wheel it across the road, past the police station
great little pub 50m from the park.
if the wind drops you will need the aerogard, and mossie coils after dark.
little charlotte hooked the biggest flathead Ive ever seen, she got it to the surface, and almost to the steps for me to grab, but it snapped 15lb line and swam off, then came back to empty the bait from the crab nets

Yeah. I am green at the gills too. Half your luck Paul.

Them rare bush seeds seem to be doing you well.

on the way across the nullabor we kept seeing huge tracts of stuff that i would have stopped to pick. there was a forest of 1 acacia at Eucla that i planned to pick on the way home, but It rained after we passed throughand all the seed was gone when we came back Pt Augusta was so green and lush, but Ive been told that graziers cant find the stock to put on the pddocks, we saw maybe 200 sheep 50 cows and 20 goats between kal and pt germein, so maybe we could get some restoration of the bush before they start overgrazing it again

I wasn't aware there was any grazing country between Eucla and Kalgoorlie except for hardy native animals.

I drove the Nullabor, over and back in 1979 and it looked like "hungry country" to me.

Then again that was 32 years ago and with time and copious amounts of XXXX memory can fade.

By the sounds of it you and family had a great away from home holiday.

Would that I could say the same thing for me and mine. Last one was when we met you at Yeppoon. Still work to do but it will happen again and maybe over over in your neck of the woods. Cheers Cisco.

mmmmm i have said at port germein too, with bit of care you can alsmost sail right to waroona island, along the main highway there are several side tracks that lead to the beach where you can camp if you have everything with you, thats where i camp have heard that the van park is good, the local progress assoc tried to get a "wind frestival" up and running there last year kites, kite surfing land yachts and so on but it didn't happen for some reason, the land yacht club here in adelaide was invited but no one wanted to go, anyway it didn't happen i had several phone calls to the lady organising the event but it just wasn't gunna happen ( would be a good place to hold such an event though)...
Another golden chance to promote land sailing has been passed up here also, at the end of this month there is the Adelaide Kite Fesival being held and i have sorted out with them to put some land yachts on display on the lawned area, a good thing i would have thought, a great way to show people what a land yacht is all about, well after inviting several people to "loan" there yachts for the weekend how many do you thing i ended up with, go on take a guess, (1) yep just 1 and that was mine, another guy is going to set up his blokart which is great,, just what does that say about trying to promote land sailing in this state, i'm so F'n pissed off, to the point i wonder why i don't forget about land sailing and go back to off road racing... i spent the weekend in Port Augusta and sailed the large clay pans just out of town, i was the only one there, maybe thats the way to go (solo)

what were the claypans like , were they really hard fresh water types or salty with soft mud nearby. what was the access like and where were they in relation to the town. how big a sailable area.
its always fascinating that there are lots of graet sailing locations that are just over a hill , or just out of view of places that we travel past or to all the time

the clay pans are actually at thehead of gulf st vincent on a by pass road called yorkies crossing, the largest of the pans is about 5 sq k's i'd say with an island right in the middle, not sure whats around the other side of the island as i haven't beeen around that side,, the clay pans are the result of salt water and on a king tide would have water on them but that hardly ever happens, part of the clay pan is the haunt of the local "hoons" who get out there in their cars,, the largest of these is about 10 k's from the town if thatare is borders the yorkies crossing road, which is a dirt road but easily traveled by any sort of car,, there is a small cutaway from the road onto the clay pan but it pays just to stop on the road first and check to see if it's wet, on the weekend i was there the edges were soft but not that soft i couldn't drive my hilux twin cab onto,, further out towards the middle it was dry and very quick but dusty from the dry clay, being rather exposed the wind got up to 25 to 28 kph while i was there,, it's not as smooth as lake gilles i guess but it's not as far either and the caravan parks are only a few k's away, if it happens to be wet then there are other things in the town that you can do as you're not out in the bush like at gilles, Yorkies crossing road is off the main highway to darwin and is sign posted just follow the road until you see the powerlines cross over the road and your there... i guess you could camp out there if you wanted to but having lived in the town for a few years and having been one of the hoons i'd say it would be a better bet to stay at one of the van parks,,,,there is another spot ( a beach) near whyalla that i had a look at as well some time back but didn't have my yacht with me at the time, loosk about 4 or 5 k's long maybe half a k wide and very white hard packed sand, hard enough to drive on at low tide, looks like a good spot to try someday
