G'day, Mick from Gormandale Vic, here. New to the forum but have been haunting the construction and sail posts for a month or two, forward plan is 2 LLM's for non racing usage. Right now I am wondering if any one has knowledge of or experience with Lake Tyrell in NW Vic as a sailing venue?

Thanks bazl, have some local prospective sites I will be investigating, lake Glenmaggie is a shallow reservoir that spends much of its' life near empty, tidal flats in the Port Welshpool / Port Albert area, portions of the Ninety Mile beach. Lake Tyrell seems a little enticing, and wondering how it compares in structure etc to the western country lakes. Google tells me they harvest salt there, caries up to 50cm water when full, when dry has a 7 cm salt crust and is fairly huge in area.

Ever time I have been to lake Tyrell it is always wet. I've never seen it dry enough to sail on due to the constant flow of groundwater into it (I may be wrong though). Some local knowledge would be good...

They do harvest salt off of a section of lake Tyrell so maybe there's a dry patch near there?


Sandy point down the east side of Melbourne is described as a good sailing venue, though I haven't been there before.

Hi LY, the more I investigate the less attractive it becomes, the hydrology is not great, the lake being the outfall for a large number of aquifers in the area, combined with rainfall gives an annual water level up to 1m. The salt crust does not seem to be overly thick at around 7cm. and the underlying sediment appears to be a mud clay mix. Being a total stranger to salt lakes how does this compare to the likes of Lake Lefroy?
