Looks like a lot of fun What lake is that?

Does the ice smooth out as the temp gets colder, and all that top layer of water freezes?

It's Smith Lake in Kila MT. About 30 miles from my home. The smoothness is most effected by snow on top of it and how that refreezes. Ice is fastest with a bit of water on top. This is considered smooth ice. The video I shot 3 weeks ago at the same place had rough ice. I'm reworking the boat right now. I sliced the axle in half and re glued it with another lamination in between. I also glued it up with 2'' of camber because I keep bottoming out on the ice. This boat is my new mini 5.6. For the iceboat version it's 6'' wider and longer than the land version. I keep making slight changes to the boat between every trip. I'm getting about where I like it now.

The new axle is done.
Best iceboating conditions this year!
I had a few issues. I broke the weld on the lower mast step about an hour into my session then late in the day I dropped the weather runner in a hole. Luckily I was going slow so no damage to the boat.
Mast step repaired today.
The dreaded high pressure has set in so no wind for a while.
