GPS Speed Trials.Friday 24th sept-Mon 27th sept 2010

The club has been really happy with the results of last years inaugural GPS speed trials and we will be running them again in conjunction with The Lightning Nickel class 5 Marathon and the Andrew Bates Perpetual Shield for Lake Lefroy Minis/Blokarts
Last year we established some baseline speeds for LLMinis, and class 5's using GPS receivers. Good reliable and accurate speed measuring units are readily available as low priced as $200 Aus.
We will be recording competitors maximum speeds on a daily basis throughout the weekend in 8 different "classes.. this year we have removed the restricted LL Mini class, as the speed results were so close.
Other classes, including junior classes, will be considered if contacted 30 days beforehand by the owner of the yacht.

1.Class 5 (FISLY, ALSA) www.fisly.org/rules/index.php
2.Class 5 Restricted. Max wheel diameter 420mm
3.Lake Lefroy Mini.Unrestricted www.seabreeze.com.au/forums/topic.asp?TOPIC_ID=39791
4.Blokart.Production.Weight divisions not applicable.
Equipment as per International Blokart Racing Assoc. Handbook
http://www.blokart.ee/purikart/TEKSTID/V%F5istlusjuhend%202007.pdf
5. Blokart . Performance. Weight divisions not applicable.
Equipment rules as per International Blokart Racing Assoc. Handbook
6.Open class 1. round mast section with sail
7.Open class 2. "Non round" mast section with sail
8.Open class 3. Solid surface sail(wing )

Registration.
Competitors shall register each morning for the days sailing at a time announced by the officials/scrutineers.
Registration will be on the basis of 1 GPS-1 person-1yacht.
Yachts ,helmets and seatbelts will be inspected.
Competitors will be given an opportunity to change class during the lunch break.
Late starters may register at this time.
Fees applicable
Initial Registration.$10.00
Change of Class$5.00.
Registration for speed trials will count as entry fee for the "Marathon Race" as speeds recorded during the race shall be allowed for submission in speed trial results.

Eligibility.
Competitors must be able to supply documented evidence of membership to a Landyacht or Blokart club . Eg membership card, receipt,or letter. The event must be included in that clubs calendar of events. For those who are not currently members of a club, The Lake Lefroy Landsailing Club is able to offer Temporary Membership at a cost of $10.00

Suitable GPS Recievers.
Any GPS with a 'max speed' function will be required by each competitor.. It should have fresh batteries and be placed so it has a good view of the sky. Taping them to the boat with a good view is better than in a pocket. A pocket that holds the GPS in a good position is generally OK though. Some cell phones can interfere with the GPS. I turn them off, especially the 3G types. Occasionally GPSs will interfere with each other if they are right next to each other. . If you get readings that don't seem realistic a log will generally sort things out. Putting a second GPS in the boat is simpler alternative.
If anyone is going to buy a GPS I recommend a Locosys GT 31. It logs at one hertz, is very sensitive and has a long battery life. Many other GPS can be set to log as well. If any one has a GT 31 it should be set up to record NMEA sentences GGA and RMC . The unit must be able to download data via a laptop USB. Older GPS units that use a larger plug may not be suitable for downloading.Ie we may not be able to check a very high reading on the laptop that will be at the lake.
Bicycle speedometers that measure from a wheel magnet or cable are not acceptable.
The competitor must ensure that the Date/time settings are correct. The position setting is to be Latitude and Longitude.Height to be in meters above sea level.
Speed readings to be in Kms per hour. The competitor must demonstrate that the memory has been cleared of all data at the beginning of the event.
Competitors must ensure that the unit is kept away from 2 way radios, mobile phones, or any electronic devices whilst in use..
Best speeds each day will be received after 5.00pm.results will simply be taken down manually. If required the scrutineer shall download the best results. Competitors must be able to supply the suitable cable if required.

Wind strength.
The club currently does not have a windmeter capable of recording the windspeed throughout the day. A large guage is being constructed. and readings will be recorded regularly throughout the day. This should enable realistic calculations of speed relative to wind

The Course.
A suitable area of at least 2kms long shall be marked out with an upwind entry zone and a downwind exit zone.
Yachts will circulate through the course keeping a safe and appropriate distance from the yacht ahead. A guide mark and/or course marshall may be employed to control the entry zone. Yachts leaving the course at any point shall return to the start zone without cutting back onto the sailing area. Larger "Open class" yachts may be directed to a different part of the sailing venue for safety reasons

make that 3 days of rain folks . over 40 mm of slow soaking rain.
i would expect sailing to be restricted to the ponds and only a small part of the lake. we will see how the lake shapes up in the next 10 days and let everyone know.
worse case is if we get a couple of strong NE which will pin the water into the club area.
sorry about this

first of let me just say, the hungi out at the lake was a huge success everyone had a ball. the purpose of the event was to have a party at night and a wee bit of sailing during the day. the people who came out to the lake came knowing there was going to be motorbike and loud music that weekend...it was a chance for everyone to unwind have a few drinks and simply chill out afterall thats what a party is loud noisy and fun...the quad bike was very popular and it was ridden during the night, for fun!...people who invited themselves out and have since complained about the bike the noise and the vomit need to remember what its like when weve gathered at the lake before in past events and weve all drunk alot some have vommited....at the end of the day if you cannot handle a quad bike making some noise or someone being a wee bit sick because they have over endulged, or some loud music" your best bet is too stay at home, and have a nice tea party"...dont come out and try to ruin the fun...because thats what it was harmless fun....heres to many more fun times ahead!

oh by the way please do tell all which one had the pick axe and was lining up the quad bike riders there was 1 quad bike, and one small 2 wheeler bike....i hope your poor attempt at humour regarding the hungi and the comments made was simply that poor humour, and please remember just because we reside in kambalda doesnt make it right by name calling, because at the end of the day, the salt lake is located right here in kambalda not bad for a bunch of bogans hey, enough of this allready lets get on to better things heres to great long weekend of landsailing, and may there be plenty of wind, good company followed by cold beverage or 2 and a nice bonfire......afterall thats what the lake represents many people gathering together having a goodtime..to all the racers good luck may the wind be with you...where planning on bringing the wind with us...if only we can find some way of doing that hmmmm kambogan dance thats whats needed bring on the wind and bring on the fun..........

September Long Weekend Race Report.
Race 1- Lightning Nickel Marathon-class 5
This year saw the second running of this Marathon with a turnout of 10 yachts prepared to race. A stomach flu accounted for 2 pilots before the race start and 1 yacht suffered steering failure whilst heading to the start line. Recent heavy rains on the Goldfields restricted the course to the number 1 pond and a short course /high lap event was held. This proved to be a fantastic opportunity for spectators to view some exceptional racing.
With 6 yachts starting, the number of laps of the 3.5km course was set at 10 laps. The wind had increased to a steady 20kph with frequent small gusts and windshifts . the windshifts ensured that every leg of the race involved tactical decision making and consequently the leading 4 yachts constantly swapped positions throughout the race , with the lead being held by 3 yachts at various times during the race . Vic Bermingham crawled back into 1st place in lap 9 after a 5 lap duel with Sandgropers Land Yacht Club pilot Murray Turner. With only a 100m lead on the second last leg of the race, Vics yacht snapped an axle and Murray powered home to a win 150m ahead of Lake Lefroy Land Sailing Club pilot Travis Bartlett. Travis had held an early lead and persistently dogged Vic and Murray till the end..
GPS speeds recorded for the race were all in The 80+ kph range with the prize going to Lake Lefroy’s Wayne Thomas at 87.1kph.
Some very close racing was seen in the middle of the fleet and all the competitors commented on just what a great race it was. The organizers will be considering making the race longer next year .
Murray’s win was a fitting reward for having travel to Lake Lefroy for 21 years in a row.

Final results were
1st Murray Turner
2nd Travis Bartlett
3rd Fearless Fairy
4th Wayne Thomas
6th Barry Pulford
7th Vic Bermingham

Race 2. The Andrew Bates Perpetual Marathon Shield- mini class
This years fleet saw an increase in entries to 11 minis, including 3 blokarts from the recently formed Perth Blokart Club . this years race featured a flying start, similar to the starts used by Blokarts when racing.
Again the course was set at 10 laps. The start was a close one with 5 yachts crossing the line overlapped. Vic Bermingham took a an early lead which helped him in the 3rd lap when the wind died and the whole fleet was stationary. Vic was the best placed to take advantage of the winds return and promptly lapped the fleet. Over the next 4 laps 4 yachts slowly pegged him back and on lap 7 the top 5 yachts were again closely matched in placings and speed. Lap 8 featured 3 lead changes between , Vic, Andy Bates(Perth Blokart Club) Paul Day(Lake Lefroy) and Sandgropers Fearless Fairy.. the final placings didn’t settle until well into the final lap, with Paul getting a good upwind shift to put some distance ahead of Andy.
Noteworthy performance came from Lyndon Crockett, George Greaves and the Fearless Fairy who were all racing minis for the first time.
GPS speeds recorded were a bit lower than the class 5’s with the top speed going to Barry Pulford at 65.4kph
Final placings were
1st Paul Day
2nd Andy Bates
3rd Vic Bermingham
4th Fearless Fairy
5th Wil Aperus
6th George Greaves
7th Barry Pulford
8th Ben Bates
9th Lyndon Crockett
10th Wayne Thomas
11th Peter Gleaves
I will post photos as soon as they come to me
