the final measure will depend on your weight and size, your sail shape , the surface your sailing on and the wind. . I measure all the top yachts at a comp from the centre of the front wheel to the front of the mast and the mast step on my present 5 had a step from 940mm to 1100mm. i then removed the front 50mm.. you do need to trial the position. the further back settings tend to perform better in strong winds , but poorly in a light wind( for me)
the exact favourite distance is secret mens business , sorry[}:)]
I reckon measuring from the front wheel only works on Class 5 because you can be pretty sure that most are very close to the class rule of 2500mm front axle to centreline of the rear. It's hard to measure from the "virtual" rear axle when the axles have any level of delta. I still use the dimension from the rear axle on everything I have ever built (60+) all classes except I haven't finished the mini!
If you are going to measure other people's yachts it is reasonable to ask first!
