Hi Everyone

I am new here and shortly plan to start building a LLF Mini. I am currently doing a engineering apprenticeship in Wellington NZ, so have availability to all the steel and equipment I will need.

For the front wheel I am going to use a children's bike wheel and fork to save costs. Now for my question. I know there has been much discussion on What wheels to use for the rear but other then the ones on the original LLF mini thread not many answers. I have been given prices for 3 brands of plastic wheel, Kings, Richmond and Fallshaw. I Understand the Fallshaw wheels are very good but also a lot more expensive. Anybody used Kings or Richmonds?

Check with Hiko and Clemco, they have sourced wheels in NZ. Ive seen some richmond wheels an youd get better wheels from a tipper. often the rubbish wheels are the same price , or more expensive than the fallshaws. in fact I recall they were cheaper in NZ

Yeah! Gizmo, Fallshaw's may well be a Known quantity and high quality but looking at those ones I'd be willing to take the punt, They certainly look the part and I do really like the Front Rim and I doubt that it will crack up in a hurry. On Schrodinger's Cat I am currently using Cheap Chinese Junk which aren't quite round but they will do for now. I may well find out more about those wheels and bring them from K1W1 land if I can con the mate into getting them for me.

I have one of these wheels that Paul put on the front of Nappy Rush.

If you leave it sitting in the sun too long the pressure will pop the tyre off the rim making a loud noise that will cause the dog to race for cover under the bed.

Spotted this on FleaBay recently.



These look reasonable and seem to have a sealed bearing in the hub.

Bunnings also now stocks a run-flat tubeless (?) or solid tyre on its newest barrows. Not sold separately at this stage. The plastic wheel rim itself seems much larger in diameter and the tyre more 'low profile'. Still meets the same total running diameter as before though.

Good points. Good to be back too, reading the pages again...

$49, wheel and tyre as you see it. No compression inner tube, as you suggest. Can't see them being 'bad' but certainly better than the cheapie B' variety reds. The guy had 10. Not sure the bearings are all that 'precise' either. Rolled a few barrow wheels at B that had the same looking bearings and they were still quite grainy and noisy. Not sloppy though.

Can't help thinking that the metal wheel is so much heavier than the placcy version.

Rotating mass, inertia etc, not unimportant?

Can't seem to find the Falshaw snowflake design placcy wheels in Melbourne...frustrating.

Any ideas?

I do hope thats a typo cause that sounds a bit scary for a pair of wheels!

(especially since I read fallshaws are now selling at $36? per complete wheel- and I think that includes decent bearings too- but that might need confirming)

You guys want to keep one thing in mind when buying any product "Cheap is as Cheap Does" Right? Sure get the best deal you can on a given product but don't compare Oranges and Apples, you'll only do yourself in the eye.

I priced a 480/800 X 8 4Ply down here and they wanted $56 for it. How will it compare with an $18 Barrow wheel. Hold and Feel them both like you were examining certain items of your anatomy compare their weight and what they feel like In the case of tires I would suggest the heavier and harder would be more suitable. Not so with the other bits

Don't forget this price included the Rib tyre. These don't come with the stock FS wheel. Bearing upgrade is only $7.

$20 for the red centre rim, the 4 ply rib tyre is the expensive bit at $40. Seems FS don't actually stock that tyre, they have to get it in.

I agree it is a little steep compared to what many have said they can find...but is it actually the same stuff, as Ron alludes to.

Not bought as yet though.

The FS wheels with the chunky block tyre is much cheaper, of course.

So how important is the rib tyre?

Bear in mind that these wheels will end up on a bigger 'boat' down the track.

I figure I haven't spent anything yet, so the total bill so far is OK.

last time I bought rib tyres, they came from Mullins Wheels, around $15 or $16 each for rib tyre + tube.

its been a while since I had to buy any though- they dont wear much running on grass.

just make sure when you buy them that the tubes are the right size- 2 of mine came with 3" x 8" tubes by mistake.

i suspect the ribbed tyre you are going to get is a great heavy, almost road tyre. the standard fallshaw KNO tyre is fine. I use them on my class5 as they are only a bit heavier than the lightweight4ply ribbed.but are taller,and take alot more wear.
see if there is a MULLINS WHEELS in Vic,. they sell a reasonably priced light 4plyfor less than $20 with a tube
