Got a plasma tourch for my birthday and now I need a project so it's time to start making plans for my next build. I had pretty good success with the LLFM but I need a second one for my son as the Zooter is pretty much done.
I could go ahead and just make a second LLFM but I need some advice first. I see that some of you have Y frame minis. Landyacht has 2 so there must be something to them. I noticed Spirit of Stupidity was OTT, Spirit of Christmas had the frame under.
What is the advantage of Y frame? I will spend 90% of my sailing at a sod farm that has just removed the sod, so there will be sod ridges every 2 feet, making a rough ride but the surface is flat and hardpacked. With our average winds we were sailing at about 40km/hr.
frame under seat is simpler to do and veryyyy comfy . you wont notice those bumps. OTT on a mini is a challenge to get it really nice . I built 2 flat Y's before the OTT, ,just to try different ideas before making the leap. I can beat the OTT if I jump in spirit of christmas or even 'the plank" which is a steel chassis with plank axle( very simple build)

I assume that everything from the mast forward is the same as the LLFM. Just need to know where to make the Y.

personally I reckon for your surface I would make the Y a 90degree angle , putting the axles aproximately under your knees and its easier to measure

Brian have a loook at the Pacific Magic. It is Class 5 and the "Y" doesn't have to be lowered just welded in place flat the front forks will need raising to have the Chassis Level. Just a Thought Occum's Razor is a rough facsimile of the Pac' Mag'.
what kinda wheels? I found these 20" garden cart solid rubber? dont know if they are any good... n but since your building i better get going on my next build
I was trying to decide wht to build ? I keep looking in the scrap pile and see all the metal from an old trampoline.. bout 1 1/2 " tubing... so next might be a home brew using this scrap.... nice to hear ur up and building again...
Hey! Big Motor Bike, I would be inclined to steer clear of those wheels.. They look great but all that solid rubber is going to get a might hard to move under Centrifugal Force, particularly at high speed. The rim style is good but that is as far as it goes.
A lot of us use that style of Rim from old BMX Bicycles for our front wheels.
Yeah! Big Motor Bike, They certainly look ok from that point but are the actual Bike rims that difficult to find? Have you looked around rubbish tips or tip shops?? I'm sure you'd come across abandoned BMX's. Failing that they are making nice alloy ones in that vein.. Ron
I found my BMX front wheel on EBay. New old stock and including delivery it was less then the $39 on that one... but I might have been lucky stumbling across it. Strangely 2nd hand ones were the same money or more
hey saby? since you have a plasma cutter have you thouht of a truss like structure.. light metal but doubled up with small pieces to make a truss like frame... was thinking of doing one in wood like that
I will consider anything, but I would not even know how to start with a truss design. I do want my next build to be uber-cool.
My plan so far is to follow the llfm plans using muffler tube again. I will use skis for the axle to give me some suspension. For the seat I want to do Fiberglas over a foam core....but maybe if I suck up enough...I can get the local Fiberglas guy (who just happens to have a five axis CAD/CAM milling machine for making molds) to help me make a seat mold without breaking the bank.
I will finish moving all my crap out of my house by Friday so the contractors can start the reno. I was able to negotiate for half the garage, so even though we will be living further down the lake, I should be able to start my build midway through January. My first project will be to mount some snow skis on my mini.
Well Brian the way to "Suck Up" to this guy is to get him out in the field and get him hooked on LY's. You have to leave him plenty of free Line and let him run a bit then Snag the Line Tight swiftly, this will set the Hook firmly and the fight shouldn't be too Great[}:)].. So says an Old Fisherman.. Picked up an old two piece aluminum mast today, it is a 460 north sails, in great shape Are these any good for land sailing or did I just buy a $20 flagpole?
