Following on from my old mans example I've decided to build a Lake Lefroy mini spec landyacht based on Pauls design with personal touches and things i learned off watching dads progress. i look forward to hearing peoples suggestions, opinions and helpful criticisms (hopefully not to many).

Welcome Dan!! Good to see you've got the fire extinguisher ready!

You'll have a job ahead of you building a better one than Ian did!

and you have been found wanting
(anymore of the old man bit and you'll do your build in the garden) [}:)]

You might be in trouble there Ian. The sail bag says 6.2m2. Then again Dan may be in trouble if he uses it. Egg him on mate. You know how these young fellas think. "There is no substitute for horsepower!!!"

Skill and cunning are the tools of the masters. Cheers Cisco

At 66kg I'm suggesting to Dan that 6.2 may be a bit small for under 25 knots [}:)]
At 72kg and as I'm old, decrepit and feeble I'll have to settle for a 3.5 or 4.2 m2
I may have taught him all that he knows, but not all that I know

well Cisco you know what they say "theres no replacement for displacement" although i doubt i want to cut up a sail that still has its whole life ahead of it. Plus its a sons duty and right to surpass his father and i plan on doing it on completely equal ground so that if i win, i win fairly and if i lose i keep trying until i succeed. [}:)]

By the way does anyone happen to know of any descent bearings for the fallshaw wheels?

I believe your Dad has read all the past posts on bearings/fallshaw wheels . That would make him the local authority on the subject.
Why dont you ask him nicely when your getting his cooked breakfast ready tommorrow, or if its urgent, ask with a cold six pack,Im sure he'll recognise the sincerety of your humbleness

Some nice workmanship there Dan and great photos too. Looks like there will be another hot yot on the top of the Mt. Gravatt resevoir soon. (Have I guessed the spot right?)

Nice try-reservoir at Springwood, about 3min from home

"Notice keep that mast step nice and short, don't be tempted to go long" why
If the sail is generating a force of X it shouldn't change the force at the join of mast step and spine, the only effect I can see with a longer mast step is a marginal reduction of rake and side lean. I would have thought that a longer mast step is merely like having a stiffener in the base of the mast

Ian
.
The glass masts are not designed to take the loads we put on them, we generally get away with it by making a flexible yacht that will spread the load, avoid lots of Aframes and triangulating..
when a gust hits you want the yacht to flex initially ,then start to release the energy stored in that flexing , as power to drive the yacht. If the yacht is too stiff you just lift wheels. Blokarts do it by having a really flexible mast, particularly at the top,so store less energy BUT make good use of what they do store by being really lightweight .
by making the mast step to high you turn the yacht into wheely popper.
. for example the mast step on my CL 5 PROMO is only 250mm . 5.5m sail
as an aside it also makes the yachts easier to stack on trailers and roofracks
anyway ,thats my take on it , but what would I know, the truth will out when we race
and we will race[}:)]

It is on the top of a water resevoir which is on the top of a hill about 20km south of Brisbane CBD.

Well of course not!! They know they've got a captive audience when you're on the bog! The smell is a small price to pay for your undivided attention.

A great place to think when undisturbed about new land yacht designs.
