hello, nice to see someone else from the states. where are you located? i'm in indiana. not alot of other landyacht enthusiasts here. conditions here are just getting good for landsailing, i.e. leaves are just about off the trees.

I am sure there will be more than yankeesailor and myself who will be keenly interested in it and it will certainly add another dimension for the garage handymen among us who would like to get into a, shall we say "a Formula 5 OTT Speed Sailer".

Landyacht has really kicked something off with the LLF Mini and Aus230 has posted some excellent information on his brand of Land Yacht building.

The collective knowledge here is some of the best in the world and certainly the best in the Southern Hemisphere. It deserves a sticky thread so that it does not get lost in history.

Do you feel like creating and titleing a thread for it and asking hillsy to make it a sticky??

Yes I would be happy to put together some more detailed drawings of what I have built,but it may take me a week or so to prepare something.
The most difficult part is the pod seat. I was fortunate to get mine from the Colin Palmer Class3 mould and all I has to do was join the two halves together and make the nose cone for it.

I think the plywood seat below (aus230) made for the under slung Y5 would be ideal for the job and easy enough for the average home builder.

Perhaps Vic could show us how he made that first while I get my drawings together. I only need to attach the frame to the floor of the seat so it may need a fairly solid piece of ply for that.

Yes I have started my class 5 build. Bought my tubing, steel and aluminum. Built a jig. and have almost completed the main frame section. I have taken several pictures and will post everything I have so far soon. I was hoping to find a tig welder cheap enough, but no luck, so i am using my stick arc welder. Its fine just have to be real carful not to burn through. My welding skills have always not been pretty but I have never broken a weld and have on fail. I just have to do alot of grinding to make them presentable. As soon as I get this section done I will post pics.

Hi Tyrone, I am looking forward to seeing your progress. I hope you made the adjustments as plan above. I am thinking the front end would be best with a solid rod type steering bar and single fork for the front wheel. It worked really well on our Imac Fed 5s. Picture below is an Imac front fork. The trick is the steering rod has to be the same weigh as the single fork, so they float balanced.

Yes, it is actually from an Imac Duo.

The same setup can also be done like this. Sort of what I had in mind for the Razor but using those rubber things from the base of windsurfer masts for the flexable joint. What do the Promo front ends look like?

I don't know if you've seen these or not, but they're inline ball joints, and they're available from mcmaster carr, here in the States.

Seems like they were about $15 or so.

The armoured hydraulic hose idea seems like a low cost KISS idea to me
I have used hydraulic hose as small motor couplings with success in the past

Paul- our drill rigs are covered in hydraulic hoses, what size are you chasing?

lots of offcuts to be found here- just have to cut them off the roll

no problems with the boss here- our rigs go through LOTS of hose and there are always odd lengths left over which are too short to use - as long as I ask the fitters or thier supervisor its all good,
we are only talking about a couple of inches- not big amounts.

Sit in it and make sure it is comfortable first, then go for it. Use what ever material you are most comfotable with for construction.

getting very close to finishing the main frame section and my thoughts are moving to the rear axles and front steering. I was going to go with just bmx fork front end like Clemco's original set up but I starting to consider this other step up that I see on the class 5 sport with or with out the mountain bike shock. It looks very simple to make and the steering tie rod push and pull looks straight forward none of the other problems with the other set ups. Does anyone have any close up pictures of this kind of steering / front wheel fork.
