So, I get my landsailer bits from my uncles hay shed, where it has been sitting dormant for 10 years.

Wheels, check. Chassis, check. Mast, check. Steering, check. Seat. . . . hmmm. No seat.

I wasn't really that fond of it anyway, given it was an old plastic school chair screwed to a piece of aluminium.

So I was thinking I might investigate the options of making one. Now given it will be a one off I was looking at fibreglassing techniques for one off projects and came up with foam sandwich.

Has anyone had any experience with using this technique and or fibre glass woven cloth? It looks to be relatively straight forward, but I'm not sure of what the finish would be like.

MrSquish,
Yup! There are many ways to make a seat, depending on your level of experience.
Something simple similar to DesertYank's but made from a sheet of 3 Ply and then glasses with 2 or 3 layers of cloth and resin. Using Resin is easy but being able to work quickly is the key. When ever you have nothing better to think about build it in your mind before you go for it. Then there is the more difficult option of making a Female Mold and building inside that. There is of course the method of making a Canvas Sling Seat. I think the Ply and Resin is the way to go. Mind you some Glass over Card Board but more Resin and Cloth is needed for that.

Hey Nikrum,

Yeah, I didn't like the idea of going to all the effort of making a mold when I knew I'd only be making one seat.

Cool, Given my inexperience with fibreglass, I kinda just wanted to sanity check the technique for what I wanted to do. So basically what I was thinking is make a skeleton frame with mdf to the desired shape, then lay and tack the foam, a couple of layers of glass, then once that's cured remove from the frame and glass the inside. Resin and Sand, Resin and Sand to the desired finish.

Do I have that right?

mrsquish,
Sounds like a plan.
I found the quickest and Simplest method was using 3Ply to make a sort of Banana Lounge sandwiching a second layer of ply over a glass mat and resin making sure you are reclining comfortably with your head up at such an angle as to see over any objects that might protrude like Gut and Feet

From the pic's you will get the idea. I have recently built low sides to the seat. Tomorrow I will try to up load more detailed pic's IF big IF the system will let me.

Tomorrow, I'll try and get the landy together for some pics as well.

Cheers,

Adam.

Now that is the way to go mrsquish. A really nice seat but for simplicity of build you couldn't get much simpler than this.

It could be laid back a little further though as the Head is a little high when sailing.
For a first build though, Seat and back rest 2 Layers diagonal cut 3 ply Glassed between and over layers and the Sides are single layer 3 Ply Glassed both sides and into place with a little curvature allowing easy entry.

I made my seat as a one-off using plywood for the seat pad and back. I then used cardboard to form the rest. The grab rails were rounded 3/4 inch pine. I then put two layers of fiberglass on each side. A bit of body filler, sanding, more body filler more sanding...then paint. This was my first go at it. If you have patience it is fairly straight forward. See sabydent builds a mini for details.

Good luck, show pics.

Wow guys,

Thanks for the pics.

I'm still leaning towards the foam sandwich, although that might change when I find out how much it costs. One thing I was thinking of is making the seat in cross sections of foam stuck together to form the entire shape, sand to desired finish, then glass. Could use vaccume bag.

Here's a pic I took today, of my landy in the driveway, Minus seat obviously. I'm still working on getting some rigging sorted and I'd like to rework the steering mechanism but it all works.

Id go 6mm marine ply and glass tape, or just a plastic school seat

I'll second the 6mm ply and fibreglass seat. You can make them pretty fast and in the shape you want.

Build it rough, glass it up and then attack it with an angle grinder with flappy paddle sanding disk to make it pretty.

Thanks Guys, especially for the pics.

I think you've convinced me to go the ply option, I'm quite handy with an angle grinder with a flappy disk and it will be a good introduction to fibreglass rather than jumping in the deep end.

Yep Squishman,
The expression is that you have to learn to walk before you can Run. For me the secret was planing my build, familiarity with the product and working quickly.
