For use on Land Yachts. Mind you that one is becoming redundant as I you have not long pointed out. Capral has a branch in Hobart and their Ali isn't too expensive.. Thanks for that! Mind you I have to buy 5 lengths to build a mast..

With the present Australian aluminium shortage / availability situation unless you are intent in building a Class5 (which has a metal mast in the class rules) a sailboard mast is perhaps the only way to go for most yachts these days.
And with that said there is SO MUCH variation in masts from fibre glass, carbon fibre, thick / thin, stiff or soft. It just depends what your after and what you can find.
And this is the reason a few months ago I mentioned a yacht with class5 specs and a fibre glass / carbon fibre mast.

I have found a supply of T6 & T8 price seams reasonable and cheaper than Carbon.
Have a look at my layout. Same as for Desert Eagle, pretty much.

That is why I buy over seas for most of my stuff. Cheaper, I can get what I want when I want it and know the quality is the same anyway. Why pay someone else for what you can do for yourself. If it fails then that is a bit tough. Warranties aren't worth the paper they are written on anyway as everything under warranty usually has to be paid for to shipping it back to the parent company. Printers for instance, I recently bought a Canon iP4700 and changed it to a CISS (Continuous Ink Supply System) if it packs it in because of that the warranty is wiped but if it went wrong under normal conditions it would cost me the first $70 to ship it back damned thing only cost $99 so it would be just as convenient to throw it away and buy another. I bought a Fly Rod Blank from the States (GLOOMIS Top of the Line stick) and I bust it.
$100 to get it back there, they would crawl up my back side with a Microscope and probably not replace it anyway. Solution; Warranty worth zip, shipping cost lost, cut my losses and give GLOOMIS a bad name as they deserve. rodandfly.com.au/

Now back to the Ali. That will have to wait until the time I need it. I named the sizes to the rep and he reckoned he can get it. If not then I will have to go for a $400 Carbon stick (Shees! I hope not).

I've been reading some other threads on masts and have come to the same conclusion. I've been looking at a new Carbon 460 and an wondering how to do a mast extension. My sails have a 4900 length.

Can you come back on the like yesterday???

Others have used a vacuum cleaner pipe (BUT ask the missus first) but what about a bit of stiff PVC "pressure" pipe from the hardware store or plumber and jamb fit to the top of the mast...

I am now looking at some second hand 100% Carbons. $400 for a new 550 is good buying but a little on the ex'y side. but there is a bunch of bit 'n' bobs as well for another $100.
As for the extension ideas I was thinking along the lines of a base extension similar to the Boarders type only home built??????? OK! So it looks like Gizmo has picked up on this one Thanks Bud..
I'm onto them, you gave me that link in other Topic Line.. They have the stuff I want or can get it.. But from my line of reading the Ali' ones tend to be a bit stiff.

So you guys can punch in your thoughts on that one as well.... It might save me from buying a lot of unsuitable gear.
