Hi guys
A month or so ago I managed to get my hands on a 4.6m fibreglass mast and Gaastra Sport 6.1 sail. Would this mast be suitable for making a segmented mast, say 4 peices? Looking for something that will fit in the car a bit easier.
Also, the sail looks like it only has half battens for the main part of the sail, only the top one is a full length one. Is this suitable for resizing for a LLF mini, or should I be adding full battens for this purpose?
cheers,
Brett

thats a yes for both. the sail will be fine as long as the material hasnt been subjected to to much sun. From memory you are sailing on beaches, so maybe a recut to 4.5m by having a longer foot , say 1.4-1.5m rather than the 1.2m I usually use. your probably going to have to make some batten pockets from the offcut material. do you plan on having a go at the sailmaking yourself?. there were some minis built a while back in Mackay? and they did the sails, which were a similar age and style, themselves so there might be some local help available that base extension would be fine as the bottom re-eforcing for the mast. I would be inclined to put a couple of wraps of glass a the joins as well as the mast is a bit old,
could you move this thread to the sailmaking section so it doesnt get lost please hillsy

Hey Brett,
Before you cut that mast, we should get together so I can show you my 3 piece mast. I have a few leftover bits that may be of use to you.

I also have some sail material useful for batten pockets and mast pockets.

The sectionalising of my mast was a very labour intensive job but the result was worth the effort.

I hope to be in Maryborough mid to late this week but will definitely be there next week so will catch up with you personally soon. Cheers Peter.
