Hey guys,

Has anyone seen any examples and or know anything about landyacht\s with two front wheels and a single rear wheel.

Cheers,

Yes there are a few examples around, some of the older ice yachts use this setup but as a landyacht it puts the rear wheel [steering] in a castering position and VERY unstable at speed, very much like a forklift or shopping trolley.
4 Wheel yachts also have been tried but with the addional friction caused by the extra wheel and the complexity of the steering, they haven't taken off either.

But if you want to make a model yacht the 2 front wheels and rear steering works well.

Thanks Gizmo,

And I guess, the side forces on a trike with duel front wheel steering wouldn't be to crash hot either.

it is all do-able and does work, perhaps with layover steering on the front wheels it could be a thing to do. you would end up with something that looked very batmobile at the front, but I dont see why not. would be a great way to build a billycart for windy roads(Like ESPERANCE!!!!!!!!)

I was just thinking about that Whike jigger. All the recumbant trikes I've seen have two front, 1 rear wheel. Which makes me wonder why that student designed his bike with two rear wheels, given that it really was a recumbant bike first, and landsailer second.

because a rear drive for 2 rear wheels is complicated to build, and a single wheel is off the shelf. having ridden a few recumbent trikes with 2 front wheels , I would go 2 rear wheels any day. when you crash a recumbent you really do sit back and have a good think about why your doing it.. 2 rear wheels would make a better trike if the rear axles could be cheaply solved

What's your gut feeling Gizmo? Would a sail powered recumbant be better with two wheels up front or one?

Sorry mate, didn't see your post until I replied. This is a design I had in my head, the intersection of the tube on each side would be where the rear axels would be.

I think the "Wike" is possibly the way to go with 1 at the front and 2 at the back.
But an idea that's been in my head for a while is a lowered / recumbant 2 wheeled bike with large "trainer" type wheels each side the the point of CR / CE.

Yeah, I had similar ideas regarding getting the center of gravity down lower. That's why I had the idea of mounting the two rear wheel axels up higher on the frame, with the driver sitting in a tube cage of sorts.

The only issue would be knee clearance where the frame meets the mast, as the intention was for the pedels to be past the mast foot somewhere.

Well........I like the idea, it makes sence to me. It does allow your

chassi to be used billycart style [downhill without sail] and with sail it

means that travel can be down two wheel tracks without the centeralised

steering wheel running all the time in the rough. Yep it has merit

I am thinking of this, gocart style kingpin front end with rackand pinion

controlled by wire, electric 12v. electric steering has been used many times

on large machinery, over hydrulic,or electric mechanical. Aircraft of course

are all fly by wire nowdays. Why not? [}:)] could post some photos in next

couple of days

Here are some pics of one of my earlier yachts, sort of a cross between yacht and trike, the size of the yacht would be regarded as Mini-Mini.

Based on this design "Rickshaw"

One of the key things with land yacht construction is "KEEP IT SIMPLE" over the years people spend so much time, money and effort into making things complex.

Keeping it simple "The KISS Principle" is one thing. Yes! But did anybody think about rear wheel steering and Body weight countering Wheel Lift?? Hmmm?
Ain't no such beast with a Rear Wheeler.. There in lies a big part of Single up front and two to the rear Wind has to apply much more effort to tip us Fat Baskets Over.

Ah Yes! Seating arrangements.. What happens if one is sitting in a seat setup like they use on Land Kites?? Has anybody given any thought to the dangers of a Canvas Sling Seat???? Yer Butt is totally exposed to any object that you may pass over. What happens if you are Roaring down a stretch and there is a Gutter not seen until last minute> F*&@####! Butt first into a 6" Bank! Ooooh! My Aching Back" Seat Capsule any day.

Yeah, good point Nikrum. Canvas sling seats would be wonderfully comfortable if your just sitting there and can guarantee a flat surface. I would think that peddling whilst in a canvas seat might also be a bit of a task, given your body might move around a bit.

This is my second go at the frame design

that was a fascinating little article gizmo.
it makes me realize that if a 3 wheel car designer saw one of our mini landyachts with the 30 degree layover steering they would have a lightbulb moment.
I say we dont tell them a thing
im impressed that we are still building the cars of the future!!!!!

Thats some interesting reading Gizmo,

Gives a pretty dim view of single front wheelers. Although the addition of a mast and sail complicates things as well.

i reckon thats because they try to put a car front end on a 2 front wheeler and a M/C front end on a 1 front wheeler. our minis would be right there in the 0,1 second response time

It seems to me that the POMs had a thing called a Robin Sort of a Three Wheel Van which had brilliant Roll Over under brakes and sharp turn. Materials and CofG's may have changed today but I think they would still be a bit unstable at speed and wouldn't have as low a CofG as Land Yachts??
Just thoughts is all.

Here is a YouTube clip that might be of interest..... The 3 wheeled "Spyder"
(And for those involved in landsailing for a long time you may remember Martin Bell from Adelaide, he's now in Queensland and has one of these....)

or even the other way around

And who can forget.... Mr Bean!!!!! and the Blue 3 wheeler.

The Robin was a single front wheel twin at the back,Morgan,BSA and Triumph all had Vtwin engines at front with single rear wheel drive, they were raced and were very succesfully

The Reliant Robin was just one of a long line of 3 wheelers from Reliant (who also made the Scimitar, Sabre and oddly the Ford RS200 class B rally car). Main reason for their popularity was the fact that as a 'trike' you could drive them on a motorcycle licence, counting as a motorbike and sidecar! You could even pep them up a bit with Honda CB125 pistons for a higher CR. Also known in the UK as "three pin plugs" or "plastic pigs". Strangely stable at speed...but not in snow (front wheel has no rut to follow), cornering is odd due to the weight distribution, and side winds were hideous. Check out the 'Bond Bug' for the ultimate incarnation of the period. They served a purpose that no longer exists.

Cheers Col
