Cyclone Hamish sure gave us some great sailing on the Sunday at Yeppoon.
when I had finished for the day my GPS (Forerunner 301) showed a max speed of 81.5 kph, but when I got home and downloaded the data it gave me a 106 kph maximum! This isn't the first time it has happened, it also occured in Speed week in 2007. I can't remember what it showed on the day but at home I discovered 91kph, and this was a blatant all out speed attempt so I am positive the data is fine. I have since found that my GPS smoothing has been set to "most" which would remove any quick peaks. I had to be really sure about this before posting and had data double checked on another site. Satellite reception was rated "excellent". Lots of looking at the data and other high speed runs to make sure. But I am confident this is real!!!

Back to Yeppoon, the speed was attained over a 300m acceleration/deceleration phase, lasting 5 seconds in the acceleration and 13s in the deceleration phase. There was a 2 second period when the speed is above 100kph.
It was late in the day and remeber a gust and I thought just keep it flat. So all 105 odd kgs leaned out and we stayed on all wheels. I looked over later at the GPS and it still showed the speed from earlier in the day. I was using a 2m sail with fibreglass mast No 2 all way. When sailing the beach earlier with Ben who was using a 3m, before the event was cancelled, his comment was that when a puff of wind came through I just accelerated away.

A few charts below!

ps: edit; sorry bout the images it auto resized them!!

Arjay that is absolutely fantastic. Well done. There were some incredible gusts on the Sunday I'm not surprised someone broke the 100.

I have a bit of experience analysing GPS tracks for a windsurfing speed website (gpsteamchallenge.com.au), I would be happy to look at this one if you're keen.

PM me your email address and I'll check it out if you like.

or... Arjay could just mention it on the "GPS and Speedtalk forum"... after all, that is what it is there for.

Arjay, there are a couple of key points to doing the "speed logging" thing while using a GPS, most of which is discussed on that forum. The most important being that you set the GPS to log every 1 or 2 seconds (ie: dont log using "auto"). Also, there are a number of software packages available that will do an analysis of the quality of the data.

I have the Garmin Etrex and we were also sailing at Yeppoon on Sunday.

Hubby did max speed 75km/hr just after lunch so over 100km was probably certainly possible. I find that if doing more than 60km/hour that I get the speed wobbles so whats the secret to bracing to be able to attain those speeds. Admittedly I am 30kg lighter as well!!

I took my Etrex skiing in July last year and it recorded over 500km an hour so I think that was a malfunction.

Simple question, for "recognised Blokart speed" is there a distance over which it has to averaged?
Like car/motorbike records 1 mile or?? (both directions)
Guiness won't recognise unless this is established prior, but who cares about Guiness World records

307 , whilst we wernt looking , they invented the GPS, the latest models can take a reading every second due to the introduction of SD cards which act as a data logger. The GT31 units tape to the back of the GREENBIRD only cost $200AUD and have built in rechargable batteries.......... They are very reliable, and you can download your data to analyze later, even plot it on google earth!
They are good enough that you can go out for a tuning session in your yacht andcheck all your changes as you sail.
i used one in yepoon as a way to decide which part of the beach was faster when sailing upwind. most of us check the 5 second av maximum. the max is usually a 2 second reading.

The spike is often due to dropping the GPSor a sudden bump at just the wrong moment.
. when sailing a blowie I brace the feet to the front bar, the knees to the side bars, and the arm that is steering also braces to the side bar. only one hand to steer, the other hand on the sheets. also tilt your bottom to the leeward cornerand the top shoulders to the other side of the seat

Hi there all!!!

Regarding the speeds. Most of the ones stated are a max speed only. I look at them as an "unofficial" records. I also believe it would be good to have over a time period or a distance, NALSA I believe uses 3 seconds as the time average, that what Greenbird's record was ratified over..126.2mph (203.1kph)!!!. How we get the blowie to go that fast??? lol.

Daisy a lot of lighter people report the same problem you have. Get some weight forward over the front wheel even put some weights up there!!!

Regarding the measurement for mine I was careful to analyse the data so it wasnt a spike from satellite dropout, bumpetc etc.

Interestingly after changing the setting on the unit, the max displayed on the unit is same as the max on downloaded info suprise suprise!!!

On the day Green bird went so damn quick, two other blowies hit the 100k mark! 101 and 100.6. There is also a previously not notified 108.9!!!!!

As for making the run one way then tring to go back the other way.....ummm NO! lol

Hope you are all well, and the wind blows wherever you are!

Hmmmm... what acceleration (and deceleration) does the data show?

I did a few quick calculations based on Arjay's data. I can't recall the actual numbers, but they were not beyond the norm for sailing a blokart.

Oh well if were not mentioning the not notified ones we will forget about the 110kph that test pilot1 did back in 2007 in his old lefroy , then left his gps in peru! without printing out his data. doh!
hefty acceleration before for 10 seconds, a 10second av 110kph then 6second decel whilst turning, then back to acc after the turn

Yes I wasn't looking, but the record established at 160km/hr by Bertad Lambert was over a distance of 500 metres.
I am not belittling anybodies speeds, just that I feel that a 3 second burst at peak seems a bit fragile compared to a longer run. At one stage Guiness wanted us to do a return trip over the same course and average the 2 like cars do!
I am sure that the 67mph in a class 5 20 years ago over 500 metres on Lytham (think about that Paul) would have seen spike speeds much higher too. I certainly know that certain muscles tightened more at times thru the run than at other times!
Very hard to compare apples with persimmons!

speeds attained and speed records achieved , I suppose should be separated, but we do need to talk about( and crow about) what has been achieved.
I cant imagine what the paper work will be like for a proper record, and yet we have these amazing little machines that tell us all we need to know

Yes we do need to talk and brag about it. But....come on guys, 106kph in a blokart??? The 75 and 80kph figures I can believe. I could not see more than 80 on those graphs. That I would say would be the absolute limit with a 3m sail. Maybe close to 90 with a 2m and a very heavy guy with a pod in 30 to 40 knts.

Neither Arjay or anyone else can prove or disprove his claims, so just take it for what it is - Arjay went f'ing fast in a Blokart!! He's not claiming a Guinness world record, just reporting an observation
