Are the other areas around Rosebud off-limits to kiters? I was there yesterday from dawn and had one little area further south all to myself until about 9am.

Then I went and had breaky and checked out Rosebud. Took one look at the crowds and scooted off back to the first spot. There were only about 4 kiters in that area after 10am.

Why the concentration of kiters? It even has a very strange launching area where kites were getting tossed into the air directly downwind because of the trees.

there was a ride day from one of the local schools there, hence the increased amount of kiters ( and the fact that's been the best wind in a while!). I too was one of the people that turned up, looked at how busy it was launching in the park, so went to my ' other' launch spot and between a mix of 10-18m kites and a good full day of uncrowded kiting :-) And yes, unless you use the wind tunnel gaps between the trees the best way to launch at rosebud is straight downwind and then straight up ( so it's not the best spot for beginners to launch.... they are better to go on the beach which can be quite small at high tide)

Although there are defined kiting areas along that coast there are so many places to launch and kite. The shallow flat water and outer sand bars exist from at least the Pier at Jetty Rd down to the Jetty at Rye, if not further. There are many areas that have grassed areas for rigging and wider beaches for launches all along the coast.

We kited down towards Rye and we had the place to ourselves, calling in to Rosebud on the way home to watch the carnage was so funny, so many kites parked at 12 in the launching area with punters trying to launch or ride thru the area. It can't be fun..

Saw at least 3 kites end up in the trees in about 10 minutes.

I guess if the majority are concentrated in the one area it makes it better for those that make the effort to travel a few extra Km's.

This was from Saturday. About 2km further south from the main beach at Rosebud. I had it all to myself in the morning, and was fully powered on my 8m Catalyst. Took the fins off my board to prevent face plants and had an absolute ball. Wind then died off to the point of needed to pump up the 11m.

Yes taking the fins off would of been a good idea! Haha I learned the hard way a couple of times... That flat shallow water is so good! U can get some speed on that

Damn it zarb, stop advertising the best spot. Unfortunately I had to work this weekend and couldn't make it down but that's the spot I always go to.

But that's why it astounds me that so many people choose to stick to the one place. It's not like your secret spot is in a hidden cove that needs a locals' knowledge to find. It was visible from Rosebud beach and from the main road.

It's like surfing at my local break in south NSW. There are km's and km's of beach with awesome peaks everywhere, but everyone goes where there are other people. Why not have a peak each?

Ps: Did someone at Rosebud on Saturday snap their lines? Saw what I thought was a nasty collision, then the kite completely flag out onto only one of the steering lines.

So true. Most of the time me and my mates have that spot all to ourselves. On occasion we will get a couple of other kiters.

Few weeks back another kiter told me that the local council is planning to have all kites banned from everywhere except for the busiest area. Is that true? I haven't seen any signs yet and I hope it doesn't happen.

The reason they want to ban kites is because the kites get in the way of the dogs wanting to have a poo on the beach!

Rosebud is the new St Kilda - when there is a northerly blowing. It is hard to understand why there are so many kites at such a short section of the bayside when most nearby spots are vacant.

FYI we own the kite shop in Rosebud opposite the busy location. We have a permit & have many dealings with local council & parks Vic. The area of Rosebud beach from the "grass area" to approximately car park "14" as its commonly known has been made the designated "wind sport" area & was up until the 40+ knot day a few weeks back marked with two large yellow buoys, one if which ended up on the beach due to the wind.

There's many many spots along the bay ideal for kiting & exploring. Until parks Vic & councils clamp down on the rules as set out by them I'd make most of it too. We love you all coming to kite at Rosebud & Rye, next time you do, drop in & say hello.
