Don't know if this has been posted before, but in my daily search of news websites to find out who's dead and who's alive, I came across this.

www.theage.com.au/national/victoria/beach-visitors-to-pay-for-car-parking-from-brighton-to-black-rock-20130812-2rsdg.html

As a regular kiter at Brighton and Hampton, I'm not sure what i am going to do to deal with this - definitely not paying $10 of my hard earnt cash to park my car for 2 hours each day...... And do that 3-4 times a week during the summer....
Fairly outraged.....
Thoughts?

You used to be able to buy a yearly parking sticker from council like the locals get, but they don't do this anymore. I think it used to cost $150. Maybe KBV could arrange something like that for us?

I think it's a great idea... if the idea is to deter families, sports, communities, and foster an effective environment for and drug and alcohol abuse.

Thankyou for posting this, was yet to see or hear about it.

Agree somewhat with Salty up there... would expect the council to want people to become more active and to facilitate health and fitness wherever possible.

Will email KBV and discuss with the council to see if there is anything we can do to help facilitate a permit for kiteboarders.

If you have any information that may help us in doing this please don't hesitate in emailing chris@kiterepublic.com.au

cheers guys, hopefully have some news soon.

have emailed KBV and put them in touch with other organizations that offer this to it's members for certain areas. Hopefully something can come from it :)

St Kilda has foreshore parking. Why wouldn't they offer the same for Brighton?

Hmm Council " how can we pay for our overseas trips?", councillor " make the suckers pay for parking where they dont right now" What a perfect thing for the backpackers vans, cos that's all that will be parking there, they wont pay the fines anyway.

Its not "their beach" - they don't own it. Converting it to a cash cow is inappropriate.

Just because other Councils have already gone for the opportunistic cash grab ($8+ per day in Kingston and Port Phillip) isn't a good reason for them bring in pay parking.

THEIR RESIDENTS oppose it too. So much for "democracy"!

Once you pay for parrking ticket it lasts all day, so when you have finished your session and are leaving give your parking ticket to the next person that shows up. I have done this many times, it saves the next person $10 and if we all do it we will only have to pay half the time.

As a Bayside resident I don't particularly care whether they charge for parking or not. It might make it a little easier for me to get a park on busy weekend days, but that's not usually a problem when the wind is good.

The Bayside Council says they pay for the beach amenities, beach car parks, foreshore maintenance and beach cleaning for the benefit of all users including people from outside the area. They say the parking fees will be used for that.

Certainly as a frequent beach user it upsets me that the beaches are covered in litter after a hot day. If the council does spend the money on more beach maintenance it's a good thing. If it's just a means of gouging money then it's not so good.

The overly emotive comments in this thread are pathetic. You're whinging like stuck pigs and ranting on about stuff without the slightest thought of what the facts are. You're riding around with thousands of dollars in kites and boards and whinging about paying a few bucks for the main ingredient.

From The Age
Councillor Alex del Porto, who suggested the scheme, said Bayside ratepayers should not have to bear the $2 million annual costs of maintaining Bayside's popular foreshores when so many users came from elsewhere.

A council report found that paid parking on the Beach Road corridor would generate about $200,000 a year (not including fines), on top of the $1 million already raised by foreshore car parks. But community feedback was overwhelmingly against the proposal with four out of five online respondents against the idea or undecided.

Gorgo... Problem is that kiteboarders are usually there when everyone else is gone... I tell you this if Altona beach has parking meters I wont kite there its just absolute crud idea. I understand maintaining the beach from people outside of the municipality.

BUT OUTSIDE PEOPLE BRING IN BUSINESS TO THE MUNICIPALITY...

Tick off those users and revenue to business will go down... I am with getting an exemption from KBV especially in winter...

I will be extremely surprised if they dedicate that extra revenue to cleaning up the beach. I'm guessing its just a massive cash cow. That's an interesting attitude to welcome the additional charges - did you also throw a party when people started charging for water ? I can't wait for the celebration of entry fees to the dandenongs, user pays road travel everywhere and even an oxygen charge - what a hoot !

I don't follow your logic.

You say that "they will use the revenue to look after the beach". Then you say " If it's just a means of gouging money then it's not so good." So which is it dude?

Then you make the big statement about "whining and ranting". I find that offensive and suggest you moderate your language.

A majority of local residents oppose the meters (even if you don't). I would suggest a majority of kiters oppose them too. The Council should listen to their residents and others in the community. I am going to write them a letter pointing this out.

All Councils spend money cleaning up, not just Bayside. I don't litter the beach when I kite there - I frequently take rubbish off the beach & recycling it.

Maybe the City of Boroondara should put tolls on their roads and make everyone who drives through get an eTag? That would make motorists outside Boroondara contribute for the maintenance of the roads that Boroondara maintains. Its the same logic.

Its called the 'Congestion Tax' in London and its coming soon to a city near you!

Melbourne Councils never have an original idea but they sure will copy a bad one.

I am assuming that locals do not have to pay? I will check this out. If I do then I will be taking this up with council.

Interesting that the majority of feedback to council on this issue advised them not to meter the road, yet they ignored this.

Why do councils ignore resident feedback? I thought we elected them to represent us?

Most inner city councils do have parking meters at various shopping strips, including Boroondara. This revenue does go into the council budget even the money from people outside their area.

Kingston have had beach parking meters for many years however residents all get 2 free beach parking passes and can get a 3rd by going to the council chambers. Most of the regulars in our area seem to have obtained a pass from somewhere. I think Bayside council may be the same.

Councils are not operated for profit, and if you care to look into it their budgets and expenditure quite transparent. Their revenue is derived primarily from rates and topped up with fines, parking meters, etc. if we are all happy to have higher rates them fine get rid of all the parking meters and parking fines etc. However be prepared for parking anarchy.

Yes Kingston has meters for parking areas as does frankston & bayside. But parking on the road is not charged, that's what they are changing.
