As a Bayside resident I don't particularly care whether they charge for parking or not. It might make it a little easier for me to get a park on busy weekend days, but that's not usually a problem when the wind is good.
The Bayside Council says they pay for the beach amenities, beach car parks, foreshore maintenance and beach cleaning for the benefit of all users including people from outside the area. They say the parking fees will be used for that.
Certainly as a frequent beach user it upsets me that the beaches are covered in litter after a hot day. If the council does spend the money on more beach maintenance it's a good thing. If it's just a means of gouging money then it's not so good.
The overly emotive comments in this thread are pathetic. You're whinging like stuck pigs and ranting on about stuff without the slightest thought of what the facts are. You're riding around with thousands of dollars in kites and boards and whinging about paying a few bucks for the main ingredient.
From The Age
Councillor Alex del Porto, who suggested the scheme, said Bayside ratepayers should not have to bear the $2 million annual costs of maintaining Bayside's popular foreshores when so many users came from elsewhere.
A council report found that paid parking on the Beach Road corridor would generate about $200,000 a year (not including fines), on top of the $1 million already raised by foreshore car parks. But community feedback was overwhelmingly against the proposal with four out of five online respondents against the idea or undecided.
