Coming down from Qld next week. What is kiting like around Lorne? I am a relative newbie. Is ther anywhere to hire some gear or should I bring my own. Appreciate some advice from locals. If it isn't worth it won't bother. If it is, which wind direction etc.

Apollo Bay, takes most directions, local riders, school, its an awesome spot. Best direction e ne along the wall, brings good swell

well you must not have spent much time down there otherwise you would know SW is very good at the falls. The east north-east always blows stronger on apollo bay side of cape pattern and riding along the wall which is a popular surf spot brings good swell. I have also had some really good kites in a north and north -west on the back beach next to the reef. Back in your box!

haha, i was going to ask what experience you have had in the area Harry and if all you were doing was looking off maps. Im not going to argue the point any more, i often kite there and it works. come down for the weekend its gonna blow a rippin east-north east. Its awesome. Ill even take some photos of 10+ kites out.

I used to live in Apollo Bay, I still go down there any weekend there is a strong SW, N, NE and Easterly. Back beach is good in North East, Falls is good in SW (only locals know about this one).

I now currently kite in St Kilda, and Apollo Bay seems to have much cleaner air, and the waves are all-time.

so id have to say tenno can come out of his box and Mr. Potter can hop back in.

ps.. potter you cant look at google earth and make an assumption, locals always know best

Ok..... thankyou for all your comments and advice....... I have spent my life Surfing and the last 5 years kiting on this coast with some of my best sessions being at Boneyards and Castle Cove ( I am sure some of you guys would recognise either myself or my vehicle ) I was not as someone suggested just going off maps ....I was simply using the maps to demonstrate the wind angles you guys are claiming...... you guys made the assumption I was going off maps only

If you refer to my original post I agree Apollo BAy is kiteable in a SW - S - SE - E I do not agree that it is kiteable in a W NW or N even NE is dubious as it is gusty and $hitty

OLDCROW : please explain to me how MArengo works on a North West ( If you are kiting waves in cross off conditions I agree with you ) ? if not ...not

PINBALL : please explain how Marengo works on a Northerly.?

TENNO : those photos are clearly not NE ! ( Photo 1 you are clearly headed towards the camera, edging .......NE is almost directly behind you ( not behind the photo but behind your angle ).

( photo 2 : looks more like a E -SE ans is probably the same day )

Please also explain how a E - NE brings "good swell"

The Falls pffft ....is not a secret spot but is well known as it is the first to get the cleaner wind with a bit more fetch

I am seriously doubting these claims of you guys " being local " or is this just one person hmmmm

In Potters defence he has been a member since 2006 so thats about 200 post a year which isnt massive.

I wish i kitesurfed when i was living in apollo bay... the wind always killed my surf session, now i love the wind

My experience with apollo has been the opposite. My timing has always been terrible so never any wind.

BTW, the one thing people here may be forgetting is that wind on the charts isn't necessary the same as wind on land. As an example, in my general experience of Brighton, technically according to the map, a N is perfect cross shore, but if you kite at Brighton, you'll find the wind wraps differently around the coast and it actually ends up being slightly offshore and bloody gusty. Apollo bay may be the same in a NE. According to the charts, the wind is offshore and not kiteable but because of the mountain range behind it, chances are the wind actually funnels down the mountain range making it more easterly and less offshore so if you measure the wind direction on the beach, you may find its not quite NE, and maybe a ENE or similar.

P.S. you're making the assumption that Harry Potter has a regular job and not leaving the option that he may have his own company and therefore be able to kite and post online whenever he wants.

get out a compass, a flag, a video recorder and record yourself kiting. That'll settle that... Seems quite petty really. Enjoy the stoke and get out and kite. peace

Average direction for Saturday 6th November Cape Otway ENE
9am - ENE. 3pm - ENE

Average direction for Saturday 6th November Aireys Inlet E
9am - ENE. 3pm - E

Now neither are Apollo bay ... Otway is closest but it was not a NE. And as I said earlier more east the better the more north more gusty
