Have kited some lakes in Northern Vic and it was fantastic. Wondering if there are any suitable lakes around Melbourne. A clear area for launching and landing would be handy.

I did kite on lake Glenmaggie last year ( not really in melb ) and super gusty.

There is one on the bellarine peninsula ( wont mention the name as the locals will not be pleased)

Cherry Lake - Altona .......a would be good for a laugh.

Cherry lake is a no no. Anecdotal advice is that there is something in the water (probably from the nearby refinery) that dissolves the glue on valves. Anecdotal possibly but I am not going to risk it.

For lake kiting head North towards Bendigo (Eppalock or Cairn Curran). Mind the locals though

I've kited a similar location to albert park lake. Gustier than anything you've experienced and less fun than my dad's funeral. I've even seen a 16m kite do a full 360 round a person because of the gusts and swirls. I.e. kite gets to the edge of the window and carries on travelling all the way around till its back in the wind window.

So what lakes in northern Vic are good for kiting?

Hume looks like it has too many hills around it to get a good, smooth, strong wind.

lakes are generally gusty and not that flat. You'd be better off travelling to inverloch or sandy point on a good day. Water is as flat as it gets and no gustiness.

i kited lake Bolac on the way across to Robe about 2 easters ago.

was good, and a great refreshing break to the drive.

water was very low (good for keeping it flat/ no chop), we basically drove around the lake until we got the perfect sideshore spot.

the best bit however, was farmer Bob pulling up in his ute for no other purpose than to wag his jaw and give us a multitude of advice, extending even to some technical aspects of what we should be doing with our 'sails'.

i suspect inland water is always going to have more wind disturbance than coming straight off the ocean, however the western plains landscape has surely got to be better than (for instance) the lakes to the north, surrounded by hill/mounts etc.
