Wrapping your kite up in your harness is a great idea... thanks for the implicit tip.
Any other top tips for a downwinder? Mini backpack with cash. Anything else?
What size kite were you riding?

We took 9m kites.
The surfboards fared better in the big swell than my Sector 60 when the wind picked up.
You can wrap your harness around the kite and use the safety leash as a shoulder strap.
I took an EPIRB, waterproof marine VHF, strobe an whistle in my BCD pockets. Had a water bladder but didn't drink.
You can call using the Marine VHF and speak directly to boats, including the Coast Guard if necessary.
I took an 18 litre waterproof backpack with foam sandals and my kite bag.
Carry money, public transport card (Myki) and phone in a waterproof case. Put your phone in an additional plastic waterproof case too just to be safe.
Its best not to go too far offshore too, and check forecasts carefully.

Thanks Peter. The EPIRB looks like a hell-of-a good idea... especially in Victoria's Winter.... I'll add it to my list of 'must get items.
In your experience, do you think you would have faired just as well with a 12m twin tip (I note you favour your sector 60).

what do you do with your pump?

12m kite would have been way overpowered.
A twin tip board would be sketchy in the bigger waves unless you are experienced using one in surf.
We don't take a pump. Do the trip, deflate and pack away the kite then catch the train back (or set up a car shuffle).
EPIRB is definitely recommended for this type of adventure when a long swim in cold water could get the better of you. But they won't stop you getting into trouble, so you need to have the appropriate skill level too.
