Firstly thanks for asking mate, there is a thread here about it. I think Funkylama knows more about it, but essentially don't kite anywhere in front of the airport. I'll find the thread...

Beat me to it Samio.
I couldn't find the link on seabreeze but there's one on EK that gives a bit more backstory to it all. Check out this pic below.

Cheers for asking dude, the bottom line is if we muck up then CASA has a case to force closure of most of the best kiting spots in hobart.

Will be happy to head out with you on a weekend for a session and pass on some info on kite spots etc. We've got it dialed now on the perfect timings to hit up each location after years of dedicated beach time and boozing sessions.

While we're talking about keeping kite locations going, here's a couple other tips. There's some great info on the tksa website that the guys have put up, but check out the pics below:
1. Cremorne beach rigging area - lots of locals here, we need to respect their rights to acess the beach without tripping over kite gear

2. Spread the love. Gives you ideas of SOME of the places you can go in Hobart so after a while without wind we're not one big scary looking pack of rabid kiters dominating it over the locals. There's more, but if you're beginning the best spots are Schoolies or Mortimers Bay on South Arm (not sure if i showed them on the map), and Marion bay for Waves. The absolute worst spots for beginners to go to are Bellerive beach and Nutgrove beach (there was a kite fatality there).

Great info, thanks for that. I'm new down here too so it helps to know the local road rules.

Yeah Cheers for that guys, and if anyone wants to go for a kite just let me know.

Had a good session friday arvo with voitek, Cremorne Lagoon S/W corner in a NW'ly

I was told know one goes there because its a little shallow, We had a great couple of hours in a very steady breeze.

I'm pretty sure this topic started in relation to the causeway and 5 mile beach kiting spots which are both excellent spots in the right conditions. Many people kite there regularly and i haven't been told otherwise that we can't fly there, if anyone knows if this is not allowed, please post a relpy to this with the correct info.

5 mile beach = down the 7mile beach road that intersects near tasmania golf club. take the left down the first obvious gravel road (not driveway) parking at end of road before boom gate.

Causeway - EIther bush it through the forest down the hill to get into the hobart end corner and set up in the scrub, or tack up from 5 mile beach.

Yep I must have mis-read it Greggy.D - 5 mile is a good spot on a northerly wind, but you also have school yards that works then too on south arm.
There's some nasty powerlines close by at 5 mile - usually walking out a bit to launch is a good idea. Cos it works on a northerly there's no problem with the airport as a run away kite would blow across the pine forest and then out to sea.

JK, you've outdone yourself with the artwork! Mr Squiggle would go nuts!

Thanks Jeremy – good to know - I've never considered kiting there as I've always considered the schoolies fetch better in a straight N or NNW. I reckon there must have been a fair bit of north for it to work.

Re 5mile beach. I've had heaps of sessions there. One of those sessions was one of the best session I have ever had anywhere, most were average and some I've felt lucky to get off the water without being lofted - if there's west, keep an eye out for bullets. It's also fun racing the cars near the causeway. As for the power lines - I'm sure we can pass on Puppy's number to anyone who gets stuck for some innovative removal ideas! hehe!!

Re proximity to airport - from my knowledge, local kiters have only been spoken to about kiting on the 7MB side infront of the strip on JK's map. We've kited heaps on the 5MB side. I would use common sense and not kite 5mile at the closest point to the strip in a direction that could blow a loose kite onto the strip. There's much better locations for that direction anyway (marion/cremorne).

yep i went all out with the crayon there. Like Lisa said, 5 mile can be prime but if there's any west in the wind it fair sucks, so so gusty.

Will pass on some wise advice here i got from the el Presidente once. Winter kiting, keep an eye out over your shoulder. The winter northerlies can be sweet, just watch for those big dark clouds coming to nuke you away... glad someones getting wind atm tho
