Just arrived at devonport, any good spots around here? I'll be heading down to hobart around new years, any tips on where to go and avoid? Any local knowledge would be much appreciated. Ill gladly return the favour for anyone visiting south coast nsw. Cheers.

Hey, Doolla

Lots of spots around the NW Coast to choose from.

Stanley has most wind directions well covered. Devonport area has some choice spots too.

But with out the wind blowing well and in the right direction we might as well be living in a box. haha.

check out the TSKA website for more details www.tksa.org.au

well, in the absence of anyone either knowing or caring i headed to bakers beach today anyway.

conditions - sunny. swell 1-2ft, wind 18-25kts W/SW.

what a beautiful spot! i'm new to kite surfing so I was a little bit hesitant to venture out on my own but i bit the bullet and had a great time. the beach is massive and with the small swell was very friendly for a newbie.

i went out about half way along the beach but spotted another kite right down the western end which would have been smarter as there is a point there providing a bit of shelter.

i didnt spot anyone kiting around devonport itself and i think in a W/SW wind you would struggle to find a spot better than bakers. the beaches around devonport appear to be covered in rocks (?)

my advice, if you can be bothered making the 30-40min drive from devonport or if you want a beautiful spot to camp/fish/kick back, do it.

a quick question for anyone reading - is there an easier way to find info on where is a good spot to kite? i mean, tassy is pretty isolated. telling people where there is a good spot is unlikely to cause a massive influx of surfers paradise proportions. i don't see the harm in sharing the info. im just saying...

Hey Doolla, in a sw bakers is a good option on the central north coast if it swings around more northerly then around the mouth of the tamar, greens beach is a good safe option and often you will see one or two of us there. There is also good camping at greens beach as well if that's what your doing.
No access to my pc at the moment so had to brief. Pm if your about the north for a while.
Cheers tony

thanks guys. didn't mean to sound like a jerk.

i was just trying to avoid long periods driving around as i'm not in tas for a long time. i guess being a newbie made me a bit reluctant to just charge off in spots without a bit of local knowledge. all worked out good tho.

might head to stanley today for a look-see.

Head towards the cable station on the western side of Stanley to kite the SW winds!

The great part of travelling is finding spots as you go,and sus sing out maps and forecasts etc. sounds like you're getting the hang of it. There are a few secret spots in tassie, but more often than not its far more fun to have anyone kiting with you than do it alone.

I'm o/s till next week, so can't join you!

Here's some more of bakers beach from a few years ago.

Thanks kitedevil. I ended up just going back to bakers but unfortunately the wind defied the forecast and died...right when i was about 50m from shore! Oh well. Will be back up north on the1st/2nd so i might have a go at stanley then. I think the forecast was for easterly... So i thought maybe ulverstone could be good? Havent checked the forecast lately tho.

Managed to get out for a session yesterday at 7 mile beach in hobart. Wind was S/SW 17-23 kts (i think). Was a bit rough for my unconditioned lower body haha but fun nonetheless.

Cheers to the guys i met there!

Hey there!
Just reading up about Bakers Beach in a W/SW.
Is it a gravel road out there?
Do you kite right out on the point there or in the big sweeping beach area?
Keen for a kite today (if the wind isn't too nuts!)

the wind will gust it's head off out there today. Not for the faint<spell check>
hearted.

head to the eastern end of the beach for better conditions.

Good luck.

Cheers for the info.

Only going to head out if it drops to more the 22-27 max knot range... Wishful thinking probably but I'll keep my eye on the wind!

Well cheers to everyone for all the tips! leethul and kitedevil - it was good to catch you at peggs!

i had a great time out there, starting to get a bit more confidence to head out on my own and get myself out of trouble if required.

i will be heading down to tassie probably a couple of times a year so I will def bring my gear and let you guys know next time i'm down.

thanks again and if you ever head up this way, let me know!
