I know its the wrong part, but the general lack of a straight answer erks me from the other one.

Have a query about the best way to work on board control, got up an running on my first, non flukey up wind run the other day but found i had trouble going anywhere other than where the kite wanted me to.

So does anyone have any hints on how to work on it and get the movements better and maybe something i can practice on land in the mean time?

Cheers all

Board control starts with body position and ends with kite control. you may need to try having your kite slightly higher in the window so you aren't overpowered. but otherwise it is generally a body position issue.
make sure you have a strong stance, with hips out towards the bar, rather than being pulled over your board and you butt sticking out. effectivly like a tug of war with the kite.
pull your toes up and dig your heels slightly heavier on back foot in and edge up wind against the kite .

sounds easy, takes practice.

greggyd's on the money there. Its all in the hips... gotta have an upright body position (not a poo stance), so pushing the hips out further forwards than you'd think you should is key.
Also have the kite trimmed up properly - overpowered and you'll be pulled off edge.

If its upwind ability you're talking about, then boardspeed (and the type of board+kite) is crucial too. Gotta have enough speed up to carve that gently upwind arc.

Hey Pirate,

Look at the PE teachers go for it!!!! unreal, I know how much you blokes love talking but us Engineers like drawing pictures then following with a report

You mention Pirate that you have trouble going anywhere else except where the kite wants you to go. I'm maybe thinking the kite might be flying all over the window, when I was learning I often got pulled around like a pendulum also and couldn't get upwind, lot's of walking up the beach, lot's of chafe, lots of WTFs.

Pretty much if you want to ride to your left, only let the kite fly in the 9-12 o'clock region.
And hence, if you want to ride to your right, only let the kite fly in the 12-3 o'clock region.

Make sure there is some decent wind about to power your kite. Anything around 15 knots requires a fair bit of kite movement were as you can park you kite still at approx 11 or 1 o'clock in 20 knots once your up and going.

When powering up your kite to get out of the water start with it at 12 o'clock and prepare to ride downwind for a small moment, if you wish to ride to your left as shown in fig 2 drop the kite to point A. You will be out of the water at this stage then send it up to point B.

When your up planning on your board you can then worry about all the stuff the boys talk about above. Just keep the point A to point B wave motion happening with the kite ensuring that you don't let it cross into the 12-3 o'clock region. Start sending it over there to jump later on

Fig 2 - Wind Window Left & Right Regions

Wind is everything, you could be the best kiter in the world but with no wind your not going up wind! Pretty much, in conclusion as per Fig 3 your never going to impress the bikini clad girls when your tacking upwind like a MOFO

Hooray for engineers thats wicked, thanks everyone, looking forward to putting it all in motion.

See you out there...:)

Be warned....

Below is a personal example why 'off its tits' wind conditions and 'bikini clad girls' don't mix.

1 second lapse of concentration and there you have it....... I think her name was Casandra?

Seven Mile Beach 2007 - Cheers for getting a shot of this one JK, I loved that kite, the piece of crap that it was

hard to top a pretty looking graph rating wind strength by its ability to blow tits off

Yep the epic beer drinking bikini bird of 2007... i think she even still has the other half of your kite as a trophy!

another important part of heading up wind or not is how you much you have the kite sheeted in.
If you let the bar out the kite will fly forward in the window and hence allow you to get upwind more, if you sheet the kit right in it will tend to move back in the window and hence pull you back to a reach or downwind even.

Unless of course you are riding an old style c kite in which case all you can do is sink the edge and grunt it.

All sounds like great advice, but I also think it all comes down to time on the water and some lessons from a person who knows what the frick he's talking about .Also try killing the kites power buy edging that hard it forces the kite forward in the wind window killing its power showing it just who's in charge ,my wife edged me that hard the other day that i even mowed the lawn and put the bins out !

hi guys,
bit late to the thread but just wanted to add my 2c worth. Being an engineer i like your graphs ando, however i reckon graph three needs some tweaking :). It should be rotated parabola as when the wind increases to "off its tits" (as you so elequently put it) you tend to get dragged down wind and its pretty much impossible to get upwind. I think the graph should be like this (blue line):

whatchareckon? i think when you are past the optimum upwind tacking ability it is probably time to think about downsizing.

Hahaha, yep that's the go!!! So maybe above "off its tits" should be "Faaaark That" and that is when its so windy you don't get out of your car
