Hi all,

I posted this request in the "Seabreeze general" section but got no info so I thought i would confine it back to the SA crew as it is more relevant to them.

I briefly discussed the idea in an email to Will (SAKSA.)

That idea being a fun weekend of differing kiting activities, open to all kite people from rank learner to experienced.

Perhaps combine the ideas with a weekend at Milang?

how about a weekend trip to yorkes once spring has arrived. could book out the private campsite at pondi (innes national park), there is flat water kiting, wave kiting, and surfing options all very close.

A downwind race from Kingston to Victor?

The enduro kiting equivalent of Paris to Dakar...

Lincoln's idea could possibly be used as a lead up to the wave / freestyle comps ?

A chance to hone either or both styles.

Or just another opportunity for the crew to kite & party in one spot.

As noted before on this & the SAKSA forum, Yorkes can provide a ride for most wind directions.

okay, maybe no distance record, but that cannonball run idea has merrit-all leave one spot at the crack of dawn and go real real fast til you get to whereever! and in true cannonball style have prises for the most ridiculas idea/s to get there(like kitestacking or nude, etc)then have necessary stops with silly skits riders have to do before they can go onto the next stage-

I do know this area like the back of my hand-
Access is very limited once you get past the granites, theres the 42 mile crossing, north of kingston, about 42 mile, then theres Parnka point, the closest part of the coorong, but you may need a punt to cross!
From the Granites to Cape Jaffa is smooth sailing, but between Cape Jaffa and Boatswains point along wrights bay is a little risky, some of the toughest beaches to navigate in any 4x4-stickly a summer operation!
Boatswains point to Robe is easy, do down winders either way regularly!
Then theres beachport further south, and southend- the options are endless weather depending!

Accomodation options:
Robe and Kingston have a plethora of accommodation options-budget depending-
From camping grounds in national parks spead all over(I might even have a top paddock crew can throw a few tents at cape jaffa if needs be) caravan parks with on site vans, and for the rare few top of the line 5 star rooms with ocean view etc. there is honestly heaps-cheap houses to load crew into, especially in low season-

If we get this kinda thing happening, I can approach caravan parks owners, motel owners, real estate mobs, property managing companys, publicans etc and organise deals too! I know most of them on a first name basis-

99% of business's down here are right behind all promotion of the SE-I also know most of the Tourism and Traders clan, so they'd be there to be milked!

well, the Dav at the Caledonnian in Robe has always been great when it comes to giving at Easter for the Onboard Comp, and I think so would Tom at the Crown Inn in Kingston-I'd also think I could get others involved easily too-

Transport access to the coast for the travelling circus?
Not sure what you mean by this! Im pretty sure most have 4x4s and we can organise shuttling crew to locations for those who dont-or we can organise lauching and landing areas with 2WD access-no sweat

Medical access for any unforseen accidents?
This ones tricky and Im not sure how it works, I'd presume medical and insurances would have to be organised by individuals depending on waivers signed with association to the comp organisers-if the down winder went from say cape jaffa to the granites, passing Kingston, then pretty much 90% of the beach is accessable for ambulance, or 4x4s can again shuttle injured crew to help, kingston has a hospital-maybe a staggered start would help eliminate accidents, then its just a race again the clock!

Coastal access to follow participants?
the 4x4 crew can follow, isnt that why we have girlfriends and wives?(im going to get slapped for that)

launch /landing options for saftey craft involved? again depending on comp location, lauching can be done in Robe, Kingston, cape Jaffa, or on any beach, if theres enough of us, we can sort something out surely-

Well, maybe we could get Coopers and red bull to donate- Im sure theyve got some department that hand promos and we can tap that resource when necessary-

Ive got a bit of time up my sleeve this time of year, so can do most running around if needs be, just let me know and I can pretty much source ANYTHING!

What time of the year would you consider to be the most consistent weather for kiting around the Limestone coast?

Thought i would post a couple of maps to reference during the discussion of the cannonball run.





The distances are very rough estimates but will help explain some places.

ANZAC weekend would work down this way, motels are quiet as are caravan parks, hence we can work deals for cheaper accommodation-

from boatswains to Robe can vary depending on how much of a rush your in! Ive done it pretty quick some days, like less than half hour-7kms

its about 17kms from Cape Jaffa to Kingston, and kingston to granites about 20kms

Lakes down near beachport, Lake George, is accessable to limited areas, and theres not a lot of water in it at present, think we need a few good rains to fill it up abit-the first lake closest to beachport has a bit of sea water influx so is ridable but thats about it-

South End to Beachport is another good option for southeasterlys-and fully accessable-South easterlys would make it difficult to do cape jaffa to kingston-

Had a chance to chat to a tourism and traders chairman today and found that Limestone coast tourism mob has heaps of funds set aside for events just like we want to set up-so getting things sorted may be easier than expected-

How many people (estimated minimum) do the tourism group expect to participate before they class this as an "event" rather than a small gathering?

To all other interested kiters,

How many people can we (SAKSA et, al) expect to attract to this event?

If Anzac Day is the choice will this impact on the current Easter kite events at Robe?
Easter weekend 2009 Fri Fri 10 Apr - Mon 13 Apr
Anzac weekend 2009 Fri 25 April - 27 Apr.

It may work in our favour as there may be people, as myself, that have prior committments for Easter.

I can not comment on the Easter weekend at Robe as I have not been there but from all comments it is excellent.

I would be interested to hear comments for and against combining the events into Anzac day weekend, even every other year.

why not pick a long weekend before easter when the winds are more consistent ? Personally I know that after the easter classic I need about a month of serious detox so anzac weekend would not be good for me...

Events for the next kiting season in SA were discussed at the SAKSA AGM last night.

The "Cannonball run" was high on the agenda and everyone seemed keen on an event of this style but there were many reservations as to the size of event we should tackle as our first effort.

A general resolve at the end of the night was to have our first event (of this type) as a combination (one day) Downwinder (cannonball style) as well as a Kite-X day which consists of bouy course racing as well as some unusual events such as rescue racing etc.

The differing disciplines also give riders who may not be strong in any one area (e.g. endurance downwinders), a chance at competing.

Staying with the "Keep it as simple as possible for our first" theory the location which seemed best for travel, some where different for a SAKSA event and somewhere which would provide the most possibilities for riding conditions was Yorke Penninsular.

Robe, Milang, South Coast and the Metro coast were all discussed but as said, SAKSA are planning events at these currently(e.g. Robe at Easter).

Once the event has had proven success it may be expanded or tried in locations such as Beachport etc.
