I have checked out some interesting racing boards at the World Cup and all boards (production and customs) are going with 3 fins for 2012. (Airush proto got 5 fins option).
The 2012 boards have way more volume than 2010 and 2011.
I have taken some photos of boards.
The stand out production board was the North LTD 2012. A lot of riders at World Cup were using it. It is my fav so far.

Airush Prototype- production

Mike's Lab (Koch's and Heineken's custom boards)

Alex Custom ( Johnno rides one of these!?)

no chance on a TT against Raceboards (skilled riders). not down-, cross- or upwind.

Intheloop, thanks for sharing your pictures!!

It seems that future is clearly Tri-fin!!!

Surely RRD K-Race would be tri-fin too.

Someone has pictures of other brands race boards for 2012?

Volume is every year higher. This could be an advantage to heavy riders? How could this affect to light weight riders??

And what about the possibility of an standard Olympic or competition in general race-board, using all the riders the same board?? Any comment or information??

Thanks for your comments!

Dude, I don't actually care.

**Edit**

I still don't really care about this and certainly didn't mean for it to kick off a debate but having actually read what you just said it doesn't make sense. The video clearly shows Nate on a TT winning a number of heats against others on Raceboards so that pretty much kills your argument that they won't beat a raceboard on a down winder race. Unless your simply inferring there were no skilled riders in that race series which I think would be difficult to claim unless you were there and knew everyone.

Upwind of course they will win cause they have a boat keel on the bottom making pointing far more efficient. Doesn't actually mean they would go faster, just that they could get there with less effort.

Something else for the red thumb girls to hit from the safety of their anonymity. Knock yourselves out ladies.

great shots of the hi tech boards
they look fast standing still

windsurf course race boards had adjustable\removable center boards
back in the day
is this possible on a kiteboard?

ive seen a twin tip with one online.

Fossy - if this is not your scene ..... cool, but those of use who are interested are into it, and Marvin is in Germany taking great photos for us to check out the latest gear.
Fossy, also mate sorry to say this, but you have no idea what you are talking about .

some pics of a race board I knocked up nearly a year ago, Old sailboard ,bit of carbon and some epoxy and hey presto .
Have had a few good sessions on it and once you get the hang of it it really flys ,I made it with 5 fin boxes ,2 at the front and 3 across the back ,can be run as 4 fin , 2,fin ,3 fin or even 1 fin.Have only really tried the config photoed and seems to screem upwind turning is a little scary but with practice I'm confident this will be ok .When we get some decent wind ( not this gusty crap) and a bit warmer I'll try some other fin configs .Problem I got is where I mainly sail is't either 6 inches deep when the tides out ,or choppy as hell when the tides in , so if there's 20 kt's blowing and it's only 6 inches deep I have not really bothered with it.The thing stops real quick when you clip the bottom..

Any questions fire away...

Nice work Rattlehead!

what size fins are you rocking on that?

what are the other specs length/width ?

have you tried ridding with the bigger fins at the front and the smaller one at the back?

No offence taken mate and you're right it's not my thing. Believe it or not I wasn't actually dissing on it I was merely pointing out that in the video......blah blah blah....ahhh whatever, I'm sure you get the drift. I'll leave you guys to it.

Thanks
board is 179 cm long ,widest point is just in front of the front fins and is 59 cm ,tail is 49 cm .Fins fitted to board are 22cm speed fins and 28 cm speed fins ( these things are like razors and would cut through loaded kitelines like a hot knife through butter)

other fins in pics 33 cm ( amrid fin carbon / kevlar)this fin has huge surface area not sure how it would go on a kiteboard?? 28 cm and 29cm speed slalom fins, all are power box.

Yes when I first used the board I tried the big fins towards the front and at the time it was fairly choppy ,I found there was too much lift off the big fins at the front, and the board was trying to foil on the fins ,mind you this was the 1 st time I'd riden the board and my technique was crap ,as I said when I get the time I'll try all configerations.

Rattlehead,
Nice build. There is some tech info here and on his website you can see the fin sizes for a tri-fin based on width of the board (for racing).
There's also a video from Airush which talks about the latest Monaro race board, and from what I recall, the quad fins had no rake. Most tri fins seem to have some rake on the front fins, and some quads do too.

Will try big fins at front ,really keen to try as tri fin set up ..

Dimensions above ..not sure how to work out volume but as you can see the board is very thick so has good volume for overall size..This board is a little heavy because it's a 20 year old glass sailbord ,the addition of fin boxes didn't really add much weight at all ,because this was my 1st attempt at building one of these things I did not want to take to one of my good boards with a circular saw.

I've got several old sail boards( 25+ years of sail boarding you tend to collect some crap) which are alot newer and lighter , some are alittle wider -some are smaller ,now I know how easy these boards are to make I'll build some others. The biggest expense is the fins ,getting decent fins ,and fins that match,I had a heap of fins but none were the same size ,And you can pick up some good cheap fins second hand , but again how many people have pairs of fins??
Now I have a good selection of fins the boards are a piece of piss to make.
