Hi Oldjenkins,
Some of us worked today

With regards to the hole in the canopy, it really depends upon how big the hole is, and exactly where the hole is. If the hole is in the rear two thirds of the canopy or in the more central area between the struts ie, not near the wingtips, then a simple patch will likely prevent the hole from getting any bigger or blowing out in a massive way on impact.
If the cut or hole is in the front third of the canopy or below the wingtip struts, then I highly recommend getting it professionally seen to. I've seen kites end up in two pieces from a cigarette burn sized hole.
Another thing to consider is cut size and orientation. Orientation and tensional loads may make some small cuts more likely to fail than large cuts in low load areas.
Do not use Tear Aid unless you have nothing else as it stretches allowing the cut to continue, it also gets "greasy" when hot. Mylar sticky back is best for temporary repairs, but nothing beats a good sewn patch applied by someone who knows kites.
If you must make a patch on your own, rounded corners 10 cent piece radius, and no less than 1" from the edge of the patch to the cut will give it a good chance to be successful. Wash the effected area with a mild soapy water, then rinse thoroughly and dry thoroughly before applying patch. If a big repair, apply both sides ensuring the two patches are of unequal size and make sure no edges of thre patches line up to form a triple thick section. Taper the edges.
Cheers, hope this helps.
