Hi :)
I'm a newbie, struggling to get up on the board. I have just bought my own kite (cabrinha 2011) and harness.
I know its winter but I'm really eager to practise my kite skills in the water before summer starts.
My problem is i'm having trouble reading the internet (wind direction & location) to plan on when to go out.
I'd preferably like to go some where near hampton (e.g. st kilda), but would be happy to make a day of it heading out to rye/rosebud.

So could someone please give me advice when looking on wind reports (seabreeze/bom) on what wind direction i should keep my eyes out for (i'm very cautious - being blown out to sea or onto beach rd terrifies me).

thank you!

Winter isnt ideal for begineers in Melbourne.

Hampton isnt ideal to learn eithier (Narrow Beach, Rock Groins etc.)
During Winter South to West works but they are Storm Fronts. Can be Strong and Gusty.. St kilda would be better

Rosebud is a good option for North to West, but can be fairly strong. you probably dont want to put your kite up in more than 20knots when starting out (depending on kite size you have)

For South/East try Inverlock or Altona..

Remember dont practice on land or near hard objects, in waist deep water. and always ask a local or someone experienced before launching

Hi Jordy, welcome to kiting!

+1 for everything foorked said.

Hampton and Brighton are really best avoided until you can comfortably stay upwind.

Until then you want the sandy and shallow places where you can walk out a ways, which as foorked mentioned, are:

StKilda, southerly to westerly
Altona, easterly to south-south-westerly
Rosebud, westerly to northerly

Jordy, how heavy are you and what size kite? That will let us guide you as to wind strengths suited for your first outings.

Also bear in mind you'll learn a lot just by going to Brighton when it's southerly to northwesterly and watching more experienced riders, having a chat, and watching others do the basic stuff too, such as launching and landing each other's kites etc.

thank you!
i'm 6ft tall, 65kg, and have bought a 9m cabrinha convert.

about a week ago i pulled over on beach rd and walked down to talk to a kiter at brighton beach, it was lighter winds though on that day. had a good chat about gear, unfortunately not on wind direction :P

thanks for those guidelines for st kilda, altona, rye ways :)

At 65kg on your 9m convert you'll want ideally 16-20 knots.

Less than 16 and you'll have trouble relaunching and getting going on the board. More than 20 and you'll start to be overpowered as well as everything happening too quickly.

The good news is, that range will expand significantly as you develop your skills. The bad news is that winter winds are rarely that steady. This is not to say you won't get out; there are steady days in winter, but summer seabreezes (made by the land heating up rather than passing cold fronts) are usually much steadier.

Keep reading forums, watching videos, asking questions, learning about your gear, safety and self-rescue procedures, right-of-way protocols, and you'll be ready to learn more quickly and safely when the conditions are right.

Nothing wrong with starting out in winter.

The next week is looking the best for the season. So windy, so good.
Come and check us out at Rosebud this weekend and we'll be happy to give you some tips and introduce you to some nice friendly kiting crew.
We'll be there on and off during week days too.
