Hi all,

My pulley lines are starting to look a little warn and i was wondering if you thought this was an acceptable or un acceptable amount of wear. When i bought the kite it had some random replcement line going through the pulley and that snapped. I replaced the line at the beginning of this year however its starting to look warn already. The warn part is only about 2 inches long and as you can see the bit of line that doesn't go though the pulley looks brand new.

Thats fine for now. If you replace the line it must be simplar spec not some rubbish you buy at bunnings. go to a boat shop and ask for vectran.

Sometimes if the wear isnt direcly in the middle you can swap the wear line around to spread the wear out so it lasts longer.

Yeah its starting to look sketchy itll last a bit longer but as Bertie said replace it with good line not a cheap brand otherwise youll end up with a very uncomfortable crash because of lines snapping

I have heard also you can wax up the line at the pulley point, so if the pulley does seize for whatever reason you sill can slide without too much friction.
Make sure your pulley is free and not binding oil it regularly.
But most of all better to fix it soon as its a long swim back if you break a line.

That's about what mine looked like when it snapped. I have replaced them with 4mm dyneema posted to my home from whitworths marine for $2.10 per meter

Thanks for the tips everyone.

The line that is on there now I purchased from a kite shop so it is at least good stuff. Anyways I've been able to get my hands on the propper rerplacement lines (they are pre notted at the correct length for $15) and I'll also get my hands on some new pulleys as well. My ones have got a bit of play in them so maybe that's what causing the line to wear out. Like I said I've only put the line on at the begging of this year and it already looks warn. As you all already know we haven't been out that much because of lack of wind and the fact that it's fricken cold!!!

That sound good. I used to get 4mm dyneema (spectra) from Kitepower for $4.50/m. Will make a note of "whitworths marine" for future reference.

I checked my lines just before launching last night and there was no visible sign of wear on the bridle lines at all. This is on a kite with about 70 hours on it.

I think the worst I have seen is a little polishing of the line but certainly never any wear. I have used only Cabrinha kites in recent years but I used other brands in the past and there was never any visible wear on them. They all used sheathed bridle line, not the braided line you showed.

Do you check your pulleys are rolling freely before launching? During your rigging and pre-launch checks pinch a loop of the bridle line tight around the pulley roller and work it back and forth. Do that for each pulley before every launch.

I wold not lubricate the pulley or do anything more than clean the sand of it and the line. Sometimes I dip my kite in the water while riding to rinse sand off it. I have never done anything special to my pulleys and they have lasted for hundreds of hours of use.
