Hey everyone. So it's been a long time coming but I've decided it's time I got my first kite :D. I've been thinking though. I've got about a months of holidays saved up and would really love to go overseas (also something I've never done) and learn in a compleatly new country. It might be cheaper in a lot of other countries (per hour) and have these spots in the world that are renoun for the sport. Plus I'd get an adventure and holiday out of it! Looking at this kitesurfing in Madagascar video on YouTube
I was wondering. Does anyone have any advise of lovely places they'd wish they'd had a few weeks at to get to learn?

Thanks and I'm super excited about this!

I am a beginner as well but I know there is lot's of kitesurfing in Brazil which is of course a beautiful country to travel as well. I think they do have a specific season for it though probably check that out.

I am from Holland (Amsterdam) myself there is lots of kitesurfing in Holland as well. However don't expect that to come cheap. It is probably more expensive than Australia but you can visit a nice coffeeshop every once and a while for a 'session' after a kiting session Most kitesurfing is done in Zeeland which is the most South-west province (state) in Holland. You also don;t really want to go here in between oct and april unless you don't mind freezing your hands and feet off

I've seen videos and heard stories about New Caledonia and Fiji which are close to papua new guinea. supposed to have great kiting and off course cheaper and nice and tropical.

Spain has some good spots too. Tarifa is very known for it but maybe even a bit too known. It will be absolutely packed.

I have seen some videos of kiting in the Caribbean as well which would not be at all! why not combine the Caribbean which Brazil?

I have heard that Cook Islands is a beautiful place to visit and they have kitesurfing lessons there. I think June to August is the best time for wind. www.southpacifickiteboarding.com/index.php

get yourself a small trainer kite learn how to fly before you go make the most of your time there! wherever you decide to go
I know your dead keen to go OS for cheap lesons but some of the aussie distributors briskites for one and probably most others will give you free lessons for purchase of kite
so here is the thought say you spend 10k for a month OS airfares alone 3-4k$
and come home buy a kite full kit another 3k$

OR

stay where you are say 2k for a month 3k if you include alcohol. buy a kite, board harness lines wetsuit full kitout etc 3k$ get free lessons and have 4k left for your next OS trip

Wow you guys make some awesome solid points. I'm trying to talk some friends into a trip to learn OS with me (and some of these mentioned places look beautiful!), but I think you're right, I'll get a small trainer kite before I go to start getting the hang of it so I can make the most of it when I go :), Still going OS though, next year is going to be epic :D

Cape Town

Stunning country with more kitebeaches and conditions than you'll ever need!

Langebaan (1hr drive north), has two learner friendly spots- Main Beach and Klein Oesterwal (Shark Bay). Shark Bay water is relatively warm and knee to waist high. You can then progress to the main lagoon or try your hand in the more challenging conditions of Bloubergstrand back down towards Cape Town. THe scene over there is massive! Wind generally from October thru to April'ish (although I do believe they're having a very slow start to the windy season so far this year). The summers I've been there & the prevailing SE wind is blowing (Cape Dr), you can kite probably 5 days out of 7- sometimes more.

I can give you mor einfo if keen. Also have my in-laws in Langebaan who have a nice little self contained unit they rent out minutes drive from both Shark Bay and Main Beach.

Once you're there, day-to-day living costs are favourable....

If I were you I would have lessons here and try and get over the gumby phase before you head os you will enjoy an exotic kite location so much more when you can explore and push yourself rather than standing in the shallows kite at 12 trying to get going also if you have a bit of experience under you're belt the kiteable windrange for you will be much greater I would hate to be in an epic location 30knts and sitting on beach watching
My 2c for what it's worth
