Thinking of taking a surfboard to the lake tomorrow to have a go unstrapped.

Just wondering what i should use? At my disposal,

DHD project 15 Rounded square tail, 6'1' by 19 1/4 by 2 3/8 My favorite board I'd hate to damage it.

Shotgun Round tail, 5'6' by 20 1/2 by 2 1/2 My daughters board, in excellent condition. If i damaged it everyone would hate me????

Niel Oak Rounded Square tail, 6'6' by 18 1/2 by 2 1/4 old board i've snapped and had repaired and havent ridden for years. If i damage it who cares!!!

Maddog 5'8' 20 bt 2 1/4 foamy. Hard bottom, round nose like a mini mal

So i'd like to use the 6'6 as I dont care if i damage it but wonder if it's just to big??? Could have 20 knots tomorrow and i have a bandit 8m and 11m at my disposal kite wise.

I use a Mark Richards 6'4" super twin for light wind stuff sometimes, gets a bit slappy when the winds up. If your 6'6 has enough rocker so it doesnt take off on you should be good, otherwise could be a bit of fun in the gusts Foamy might take some finesse!

Yeah good point i wasnt thinking about rocker,

Thats 6'6 is old school must be 14 years old when rocker was the flavour, cheers. I'll beat it up.

Yeah it would be good to be good enough and go out and get the crazy looks then smoke it on the foamy, but thats not going to happen haha.

I'd use the 6'6, remember to keep most of your weight on your front foot & once your up & riding - to go upwind, don't try to edge like you would on a TT...instead use the fins. So with trying to keep a fairly upright stance (depending on wind strength), push your back foot downwind slightly. This will with practice point the nose of your board upwind, works the same heel-side or toe-side & when you get it right you will feel yourself tracking upwind.

Have fun & let us know how you go.

EDIT: forgot to add, be careful of breaking fins in the shallow water at the lake.

Hi belldiver, board size depends on wind and kite size... Skillet, Skater n Celeratis are awesome surfboards from my experience!!

I practiced a few standing starts in the shallows today and got 80% of them. Hadnt done them before so it was good to get a few dialed in. Feel like a kook when i go to do a down winder and sit down in the sand in the shoey to start off haha.

Is there any real trick to deep water starts strapless??

@ Brisbud.

Ill look at different boards when I'm ready to buy, just using the gear i have at home to see how I go getting up and riding strapless.

My experience is.....

Get your feet on top of the board, squeeze your arse up close and dive the kite.
I find it sometimes helps to wriggle the kite backwards and forwards to create downwind pressure against the board.

go in and see tully at shotgun.
his got a custom board he made for kiters to demo (if you can wrestle it off my mate who 'looks' after it).
i reckon for what I like he glassed it to heavy to be honest (beefed up construction).
i do believe in supporting quality local shapers though??? tully would whip you up a made kiting stick!

hey good job on jumping on a standard surfboard straight up too???
you'll be 1 billion times better off than the numpties with the 'bombproof' kite surf boards.
lol.

And most of the time my back foot is way way infront of the back foot strap.position!

@ surfingboye,

Not sure what you men by the bombproof kiteboards? Do you mean the bamboo laminates?? I figure kiting would flog out a standard board pretty quickly as your always on your feet plus the weight of the kite, laminates seem like the way to go?? I was thinking of getting a drifter as have a few mates in WA who rate them. I dont really have any mates here on the coast that ride surfboards and kite.

with boards i think it is pretty simple???
its a performance v strength thing.
some folk want a board that could go back on the shelf and sell as new 12 months old, i would rather have a board with deck compressions that offers more performance. so for me a standard surfboard can't be beat.

the drifter is somewhere in between. the new ones feel really heavy, too heavy they scared me off.

each to their own i guess. just make sure you demo the 'kite surfboards'.
i.e. any laminate/epoxy as i find they are HORRIBLE!!!

Went out today on the 6'6' in the lake and I suck unstrapped haha. It was like i was a total beginner kook again.

wind was light so that may be a factor but I didnt even get close to getting up from a deep water start.

I got a few times from a standing start on my good side, im goofy and even managed to turn and come back toe side no real dramas,

But all up i was terrible and really though i was going to destroy my kite, dont think ive ever crashed that much. Even inverted it something i only ever did when i had a rebel.

Interesting because i never bothered to do any research, from a standing start i found it easier to have my back foot on the board then power up and step on with my front.

Yet when i was using my TT I always had my front foot in?

I put this down to as you hop a few times the board would end up facing to far down wind (because of the large thruster fins) but having my rear foot on the tail, I could keep it pointed where i wanted?? Is that the go???

from a water start i have my heels on the board first, then press down so my toes are in line with the stringer while at the same time diving the kite. i wiggle my feet to a normal stance as I get going. it'll become second nature after some practice. its amazing how quick you can grab your board and get going with a wave bearing down on you !

which board is an interesting one - ive got a heap of them and found the more stable it was the easier it is to practice a gybe on. for me 6' ,18.5 and 2.5 was easier than 5'8, 19.5 and 2 3/8. it probably has more volume...

riding super light normal surfboards is what i prefer. all those boards i couldn't bring myself to trade in (for $100) over the years are now getting plenty of use again. same as surfing - the lighter the better!

funny you said you have a board which is a favourite you don't want to wreck - i have two like that and since i barely ever surf these days since I started kiting, ive just started riding them with the kite and they go unreal. a merrick semi-pro and a merrick fred rubble.

+1 what topple said - i recently ripped two fins (plugs and all!) out of a particularly nice JS custom on a sandbank.

maddog looks sick for hooning around but at the risk of recommending ruining your family life I would take your daughters board for sure. Those dimensions are sick. I'm about to build one an inch wider and around 2'3/4 thick
Can't wait.
You can get her to take photos for instagram = happy family lol
