Only one problem.. this guy AFAIK does it for jetski rescue.. 99.999% of the time your on your bloody own. There is no jetski just you and your side arm and you have no alternative but to blast your way out.. or get eated by sharkies.

Self Rescue I see is using the kite to pull you in not wrapping it up like a friggggin taco this is not Mexican food.

^^^^ Agreed, but knowing how to pack up in the water is an important skill too.

When someone says self rescue I think of flagging the kite out on to the safety (you all have a safety that does that right?), rolling my lines up, and setting the kite up so I can use it as a sail to drag my sorry, frustrated, angry and very-scared-of-sharks behind back in to the beach. For bonus points also trying not to lose my board in the process...

On the other hand, the method in the video is a good way to prepare your kite if you have to swim in back though a surf break.

PS: My longest self rescue is over 2km

You'd think the clue would be "self"

The method in the video is more "awaiting rescue"

Agree with you Galah, I've had to sail my arse back into the beach plenty of times

I have no doubt I will be doing one that long one of these days. I am easy pushing out 3km from shore and I am not confident to go over the boneyard yet.

Once I do I am sure I will exceed 5km out. I need to go minimum of 2km out to clear the airport to do a downwinder from Ho'okipa

Don't go out in any surf you are comfortable swimming out through , and then back in
Don't go out further than you are comfortable to swim back in unaided
Don't go out where your downwind and self rescue options are going to hurt

Whilst I am sure most of us have broken those rules at one time or another (hell, I know I have managed to break all 3 at the same time ) it is important to consider that any self rescue will be 45 degrees down wind at best, not including the potential tea bagging and/or dead downwind drag you will get while packing up.

Packing up in the water is not a 5 exercise either, even if you manage not to get yourself tangled in your own lines...
