Shhhssshh - you did say beginner, right?

Currumbin is no place for learners - not enough space and strong currents. One drop in the drink and your board is off to sea before you can say "Opps, I need another 1000 bucks". Besides, too many swimmers and the Lifeguards give you hell as they need to protect beachgoers, specially from people that don't have enough control, yet.

.. Broadwater yes

I'm not a local, but regularly travel to the Gold Coast with work, and whenever possible, I bring my kite. If you want flat water and good launching areas, I would recommend a area opposite Seaworld and a small beach area at Runaway Bay, I'm not sure what the locals call these areas, but I've found the locals

really friendly and helpful. here's a couple of pics showing the areas I've mentioned

The 2 places in the above photos are KFC's (Loaders Creek) at Labrador and Shearwater Esplanade at Runaway Bay. The launch area and area of beach can be very limited at KFC's on high tide and is not good for some one learning by themselves as a tendency to end up down wind and in some rocky or over the other side of a creek entrance areas is huge with limited ability to walk back along a beach to start all over again. The prefered option for a NOOB would be Shearwater Esplanade at Runaway Bay. It has a nice long beach where a NOOB can start and launch at one end upwind and end up downwind after a few attemps then walk back along the beach and start the process all over again. Just come say Hi and introduce yourself as there are plenty of helpfull and friendly locals enjoying the stoke, me being one of them. The rules for the Broadwater are that of Queensland General Boating rules that can be found by doing a google search on these and general Kite Surfing rules on right of way and courtesy that one should familiarise themself with, that is all listed on the www.SEQKA.com.au website as well it has good arial map locations indicated of the above 2 locations. Be aware there is alot of boat action in these 2 locations particularly Shearwater as it's a bit of a thoroughfare for the boaties. The beaches are generally not an option for a NOOB apart from possibly Kirra Beach at Kirra on any Northerly type winds and when the swell is small all other beach locations have some trickiness attached to them which is something that you will learn through local knowledge and ability as you progress to attemp these type locations. So all there is left to do is just do it and we will see you there!!!

March is still okish for wind but it is starting to draw to a close of our afternoon seabreeze conditions season before switching into Winter Southerlies driving up the Coast generated from down South. In the past years IMHO, I have still struck pretty good winds in March but as always Queensland is not as consistant on winds as we hear the guys in WA boast about all the time, except sounds like they have been having a lousy one this year

Quit while you are ahead.

Kiting is over rated.

There are some reallly exciting sports coming up just around the corner which will show kiting to be the lame pass time that it is.
