Reading through the windsurfers forums I noticed they didnt like us at all. Surely its just a really bad case of jelousy they are trying to compete with us on how many photos we have posted on Seabreeze.com and persist on bad mouthing us.
My question is should we stoop to thier level and be immature aswell??? should we badmouth them???
i know alot of you kiters out there stated on windsurfers but please forget that and join our battle!!!

(remember this is all in the name of good fun)

i place windsurfers with snow skiers, boogie boarders, mal riders, triathletes and various other abberant parallel sport participants

ie people who think they are having fun but are oblivious to where it is really at.

but thats fine, they should stay there and be happy and not bother those who pursue more enlightened pastimes of say kiting, snowboarding, surfing properly etc

you got it all wrong, dont give them so much dignity or respect! they are more like the pesky swimmers that swim downwind of you and hang around thinking they are having fun but are really just wasting space.

as for skiing.. its actualy a really good sport.. its wher it started..

as for mal riders.. same applies

(note i do neither of these)

i snowboarded when i lived near snow.. now i boooger board koz surfing is 2 much effort in the mornings

oh please... why even start this topic. I have a lot of respect for polies, most of them were out carving it up when most of the kitesurfing population hated the wind. The other half are kitesurfers.

To be a good windsurfer - takes years and lots of commitment. I have lots of respect for them.
Kitesurfing is much much easier....and also a lot more fun. Kitesuring is almost like scuba diving its so easy. And its soooo much more rewarding. (but also much more dangerous)
And it looks more impressive too. How many times do you see people standing on the beach watching windsurfers... I think this is what erks the windsurfers.

But never mind. Dont take what they say on their forum personally - its more of a bad reflection of them - than of us.

Can't blame you for trying pynnee, but unfortunately when it comes to waves, the poleys totally own it. I know it, you know it, and everyone else knows it.

Bolgo described kiters in the waves perfectly with:

"ie people who think they are having fun but are oblivious to where it is really at."

as long as their having fun though.

(laughing) I love the pics. echo. Any thread that has content that makes me laugh is worth reading.

I married a pole surfer and no matter how hard I try, I can't convert her to kite power. Simply because it's too intimidating and extreme for her.

I respect her choice, she's happy doing what she does. Individuals who bitch and moan, are simply that bitchers and moaners.

windsurfing may appear to be a crappy sport compared to kitesurfing but i asure you it is a far more core sport than kitesurfing will ever be. plus it can actually be just as fun as kitesurfing (only you need a hurricane to do it) lol

anyone who knocks a sport and hasnt done it or is no good at it is an idiot. windsurfing is great why kitesurfing has taken off is it is easy to carry the gear around and need a whole lot less wind to have a blast and is easier

Define core?... lol

Well to be completely honest I found windsurfing a hell of a lot easier to learn than kitesurfing, I mean they are both absolutly wicked sports though. One thing which is a bit annoying is people's reasoning for doing it is that it requires a lot of skill, which is evident when the waves are pumping, but then my question to that would be; are you doing it for yourself, or just to say you can do it? surely having fun should be the number 1 motive?

Yeh, as echo said, everyone to their own, they are both awesome sports, why compare them in such general terms when evidently different people are more apt at one or the other and hence will be more likely to prefer one or the other, they can both be just as fun and entail just as much skill as one another (if the latter is why you do it...I just dont understand you ).

I've got crap from surfers for kiting before, they reknd it was a 'pussy sport' all I can say is that on that windy windy day I don't think there was another person on the beach feeling as hiiiigh as me... so I really didnt care ... even though I wouldn't agree with them.

By the way, I rekn surfing is by far the most difficult water/board sport that I've tried... I've been at it for ages and I still suck

BOTTOM LINE IS: Do what YOU love; we are all different

Again????? Really????? This argument will never end due to the few from each sport who have identity issues.

Ps - please don't call kiting 'extreme', it embarresses me. An extreme sport is only extreme when it is taken to the extreme...... which 99.9999% of people definately don't.

"Reading through the windsurfers forums" does this make you windsurfing curious

Windsurfing - surfing without a wave and you don't have to paddle

Kiteing - Wakeboarding without a boat so it's clean and Green

Kiteing stopped being hardcore when they started making safe kites. Now even girls and kids can do it

Thing is if kiting was around when I was young and fit I would of been right into it and just as keen and proud as current kiters.

Im just a bitter and twisted old man attempting to maintain my coolness which is rapidly de frosting

Talking of bad mouths check out my teeth

Come back wind all is forgiven

"Bisurfer" that's funny!

This is a good thread which could have turned into anything but has a bunch of good & reasonable comments - good on yas!

I will just add that the reason I windsurf, rather than kitesurf (and I think this applies to a lot of people) is because I like to race people - for me it's all about speed, not tricks.

A perfect day is getting a few guys together who are quick sailors and racing each other around some marks pushing each other to the limit of control. I get off on speed - when I do jumps it's how high, not how many spins. I'm the same in snowboarding - I race my mates down the mountain and leave the park to the lunatics doing the spins and grabs and all that.

So windsurfing is way more suited to racing, whereas people who lke getting upside down and doing spins and stuff - kitesurfing's their thing. That's cool and I totally respect that. Some people do freestyle on windsurfers too and that's fine, but it's just not my thing.

Are there any kiters who race? (Sorry if that's a stupid question)

AUS1111:

I dont really see a lot of kiters racing - most on down-winders...

i guess the reason is: the bigger a kite you put up, the slower you go, as you have to keep it under control - edging more to drag the mofo upwind. Then you let it go to 12 and jump huge.

is it the opposite for windsurfing?

robbo.

Hmmm...bit complicated but generally in windsurfing you will go fastest with the biggest sail you can control in any given windstrength. If your sail is too big you won't necessarily be slower, you'll just be out of control and crash. Crashing is slow!

I guess windsurfing sails have more stuff that you can adjust to make them go faster in different circumstances. Sails for speed/ racing are very different to sails for freesytle / wave sailing also of course.

I would have thought that windsurfers are also more suited to racing since they are smaller and can sail pretty close together around buoys and stuff. Wouldn't there be a good chance of a horrible mess at the turning mark if you had a heap of kites racing together?

So if kiters were going to race a downwinder, what type of board would be fastest? Is there a specific racing type of board, or would you go for the twin-tip or the ones that look like surfboards?

"should we compete with windsurfers???"
Well I have to compete....
nearly everytime I go kite the waves at the local spot.
Unless it's very tiny like 1ft and the wind is really soft.
Then the poleys don't bother going out....
and I don't blame them.
Sailing little piss-weak waves in pus wind on a high volume poleboard with a fat-arse rig is totally sh1tfull.

And the reason the poleys don't like you Pynnee is because of your kitelines.
It's the strings man, it's always the strings.

windsurfing CORE= going out in mast high surf 35knots of wind on practically a surfboard with a sheet ontop, going flat out and launching your self into a stalled out backie amongst a heap of gear that has huge potential to injure or impale you in some way if you f*ck up because you are actually falling out of the sky. not being able to dangle 30 or so meters under a parachute spinning around like your hooked on a swivel harness attached to your clothesline buttchecking and then claiming a tripple back loop.

p.s. you found it easier to learn to windsurf? what can you do? carve jibe? i reckon you can learn a mobe kitesurfing in the time it takes to work out how to turn around with speed windsurfing.

lol funny stuff, yes we had this guy on the windsurfing forums talking it up, surely he would have a better photo of himself than standing on the beach flying his kite.

I've got great respect for kitesurfing and those who do it, after all we're all wind/water junkies. I just choose windsurfing as I'm into the waves and I find it a better fit for those conditions. I also do a fair bit of freestyle and the challenge that it poses is immense :| The fact that i'm also a lightweight means that I don't have the light wind issues that a lot of other guys have.

The one thing that has always intrigued about kites and waves is the whole strapless thing. I mean I see the big draw card of a kite is massive air and this is basically rendered null and void when you ride strapless. In windsurfing smacking the lip and launching into a huge aerial is pretty much the holy grail of wave riding (as the pic with Polakow above demonstrates). Is this really difficult to do on a kite? Or its just not done? Not having a go, it's just always interested me.
