am interested to hear what the smallest body of water is potentially kitable.

of course we have all heard of the farm-boy eyeing off the dam in the top paddock, and we have probably all google eyeballed our way across every pond within 50ks of our own place...

but whats feasible? clearly you need to be able to A) get moving/planing B) pop one trick C) land and pull up before hitting the sand/mud/rocks/other side of the pool...

i understand that a huge amount depends on the surroundings... but lets make it a given that its located in a relatively open area (no tree/hill wind shadows), and only that the launch/landing etc side of things is actually possible within striking distance to access.

what have ya got?

Luderitz Speed Trials, is conducted in the following waters:

" The run is situated at the bottom of a lagoon, and is very flat.
A straight 700m long canal will dug this year, which is 10m wide and 50-100cm deep. This will ensure a longer period when runs can be done and the straight canal will result in better averages."

A few years ago I kited on the pond at Avalon beach, pretty much for the same reason. It was a bit of a gusty day andjust turned out to be the right angle. Managed to get up, bust out one trick and stop before the board came into contact with Australia and I started to slow down rapidly. Had to walk up the side of the pond as there wsnt really the space to go upwind but after the umpteeth time of pulling sand out of my teeth and deeming that there wasn't much room to really try anything I decided to give up and went back to the ocean.

hmmm interesting Kyteryder.

although, if i had a 700 metre long puddle in my yard and i was landlocked on a farm, i dont think i would even be asking...

however, at 10m wide i dont think you would be working on any of your kiteloops.

Low tide at Tannum Sands results in lots of puddles, usually only about 30 - 40m long. The trick is to jump from the open ocean into a puddle which is not always achievable. Failing that, the bored just motor back and forth throwing down whatever trick comes to mind.

I wouldn't help him if he were in trouble tangled around a tree by his neck.

I saw Ewan Jaspan kiting the puddle that sometimes forms at St Kilda Kitebeach after heavy rain. I haven't got any photos though...

I actually think that is a pretty cool video. Bring back Alex Sanz! Or RSC. It's getting boring around here.

Back in the dark ages an un-named Botany beach developed some nice puddles, about 5m or so down the wind line and about 15-20m across the wind line, maybe ankle / mid shin deep, and that was enough to stay upwind on dodgy old and scary monster c kites.

Downside was you would occasionally get tbagged in to the rock walls, concrete, wooden fence, road or power lines that were all within 20m downwind, so in hindsight maybe that wasn't the best of spots for those games...

There was another one that I'm thinking might've been near where you're talking about Galah, about a 100m long triangle of water with a sandbank in the middle. I was just a track about 2m wide and a foot deep in no-mans land. Gone now though, I think the tides washed it away over time.

Pretty fun for a couple of laps but it gets boring after about 10mins.
