I was lucky enough to have the morning off on Wednesday 11 of Jan when the big wind hit melbourne. Record gusts of 122km/h were recorded in St Kilda. I was riding my 6meters with a strapless surf board that flew away 100 meters so I had to leave the water.

it hardly gusted to 122km/h as thats 65knts. (maybe inbetween laneways)

i was out at inverloch at around 8am in the morning as the wind came in and i struggle to believe anyone on a surfboard was able to kite in those conditions let alone put a kite up.

i called it quites after 10mins out on the water as i struggled to keep anything under control

if you want to see pics the head to www.tribecarew.com/cms/index.php/jmgall/kite-board/2011.html

to be honest... it was very exiting. I like getting out on hi winds and I knew it was going to get nasty, I just did not know how much. I was out in the water for a while before it got super strong, and had a few laps in the storm till I lost my board.
After the storm left I went out again and another to big gusts came to the beach, not near as strong but it was good fun.
Next time I put my straps on and try to borrow a slighter smaller kite...

To be honest I think OP has been lucky to dodge an avalanche of hate on this one.

This is what happens, even to experienced kiters, when freak gusts hit. Pure luck OP didn't end up like this?
