Came in for a solo land today. Stuffed up the "yank the front lines then pull top line" technique so I dumped to safety.

I heard a twang and then watched my kite bugger off over the dunes and land on a fence.
Luckily no damage to kite or passers by.

The through bar elastisized line had snapped. It didn't look that worn either.

Morrell of the story.

Replace your elastersized through bar safety line more often than you expect!..

I reckon line replacement sets should be a bit cheaper, I would replace every year if it was just that much more affordable, nothing better than that feeling when you roll out some new lines knowing that they will be there for you on the way down ;)

Same thing happened to me not long ago. Made me paranoid about my lines, thinking about just replacing my bar. Wanted to replace my depower line too but it looks like a pain in the neck.

Best way to test, for me, is to tie the leash to a fence or tree and lean forward with your harness on obviously. Lean away from the tree and see if you can even try and walk against it - pull on it. It should not snap.

I don't think it was his safety leash that snapped.

Are the lines coated or bare ,on the PLynn bars my mate has covered the override line with industrial heat shrink works great stops it from wearing due to abrasion.

The dyneema from braidtech used on your ozones is one if not the best quality and will last a good few seasons, I've had some for 4 seasons and had no issues in heavy conditions, the safety however is an open weave so water sand etc gets into the open fibres causing wear also unlike the lines which are chemically inert , it may be affected by the uv, so best to wash after each gig or replace ever year with the provided spare in your kit

lol.

Moral of the story:-

Change your underWEAR system, dude.

You need to lose that dumb-arse elastic bra-strap thing that you call a 'safety' tether.

Get a real death-leash, man.

One that is fully over-designed for all contingencies.

Seriously, how can a skinny, elastic, thru-the-bra string offer any confidence?

It must be so unnerving working with a 3rd rate kite management system ...

worrying whether the kite will fly off when you pull the trigger.

lol.

Rogue runaway kites should never happen.

For the second time it wasn't his so called 'death leash'. And if he didn't have one, he would still have lost his kite with the landing shannigans.

Hey Plummet, I found my "elastersized through bar safety line" was loaded up when kite was fully powered. I made it about an inch longer using a little loop I found in my kite kit (added the little loop in at the chicken loop end). Yours may have already been broken inside the elastic when you released.

..like as soon as you see it..

Mate, I agree with slave on this one. I snapped 3 of these weak ass pieces of crap within one month last year. The first one was the original so had seen a bit of use but the next 2 were the replacement ones that came with the kites. The shanghai brand if you know what i'm saying.. They were snapping just from going through the bar but when my kite headed off towards the SLSC building after unhooking accidently (another "shanghai" brand specialty) I never used the stupid elastic again.
I just use up to 4mm 12 braid ordinary cord without the centre piece now. Steel rings on the end. Bowlines with some extra threading and halfhitches, beautiful. cost about a fiver for 2kites worth.

Just replaced my safety elastic line and now my chicken loop line ONE MONTH from purchase. Going to be an expensive season if this type of wear keeps up.

Sounds like a manufacturing fault of these lines aren't lasting and should be brought to Ozones attention.
I've switched to fone bandits from ozone now as prefer their kites but I still use ozone bars as prefer their bars to the fone ones. Never had a problem with the safety lines yet.

Lets face it men. There was no manufacturing fault. I just left the line too long before replacing it. As someone stated above they are cheap and you get spares with each kite. In fact I have a spare. So it was just my laziness the resulted in a line too worn and then breaking.

Won't cost you a cent, contact your dealer, if they are worth their salt they'll replace free, broke 3 I've had a bar and line set 4 years with just a bit of wear on the foam bar, easily over 1000 hrs use
