Holden Ute - heaps of room for the esky, kites and gear and you can keep a swag in the back so you can stay the night, get the lockable hard cover and your stuff will be safe throw wet stuff in the back.
Get a V8 you will love the torque.

menox, how do you go about carrying your board on your bike?
I am thinking of selling my car when I move back to Perth and just having the TLR for my only transport. Was thinking of ways to get kite gear to and from the beach. Plus also rather not have salt water all over my baby.

Hey newo, is ur baby the TLR? or the car lol. I have yet to take the board as im only learning. Iv just been body dragging and flying the kite. I Put my waist harness on (mystic warrior) but i leave the spreader bar un done and tie it to my side (so it doesnt dig into tank)

And my waroo's bag has good side pockets which carry the pump and bar securley. I will be taking my board soon, and i intend to strap it to the front of the bag with some short hockey straps. Should hold up fine. But dude honestly if you go kiting a fair bit i would definately stay with the car!

I only live like less then 5 min ride to beach (so all i wear is my helmet for protection) But if you were going to travel long distances its your own choice but i always like to have gear on so carrying the extra clothes is added luggage.
Also i found you have you helmet to store aswell, Sometimes i lock it in the pillion seat.

Its a bit of a pain in the butt, although i should be getting a little suzuki swift tomorrow!!!

Didn't you just get that car? And doesn't that bike only get you into trouble?

Anyway, my 2 cents worth, 4x4 ute, dual cab, whatever, with a canopy and tray liner. Chuck all your wet gear in the back without any dramas and hose it out once a year on the cars birthday. It'll go anywhere and if you put the tailgate down and a tarp over the back you've got mobs of room to sleep on your kiting adventures

Not much beats the commodore wagon for price and availability of info and parts for the older ones.. only downfall i see is the cost of fuel is a bit more than the 4 cyl's, & ppl can see in the windows if ya gears not covered..

If money wasn't an issue a nice 4x4 would be good.. say the porsche cayenne, wouldn't that look good on the beach!

The Porsche Cayenne has to be the stupidist 4WD in existence. I have no respect for a vehicle that doesn't know what it is, and is useless at what it is supposed to do.

I have a 1982 VW Campervan. Can camp at the beach overnight (wouldn't want to do that at Woodies). After a cool water session spark up the stove and make myself a hot drink. Has a fridge to keep the drinks cold for the warmer days, and carries some folding chairs for when you are waiting for the wind to come in. I Installed some speakers in a box, so you can listen to some tunes outside the van.

When I was in Perth I borrowed a mates 3 door Hyundai Excel that he bought for $1000. He is into surfing, so I didn't have to worry about filling it with sand, because it already was. His philosophy on cars was:

"I treat my cars like I treat my women. Get a cheap one, keep it well lubricated and when it blows up, get another one."

With the cost of fuel, servicing etc etc I am inclined to agree somewhat. Get a cheap banger - if you kill it in a year of driving it doesn't matter and just buy another $1000 car.

lost person,
i worked long and hard (some people debate my version) to achieve a VW touareg which shares drivetrain, chassis and transmission of the cayenne and after some serious work on the tracks and beaches of fraser island,
i reckon you don't know jack about anything further advanced than thousand dollar vehicles.

having said this, my favourite van was still my bright blue 79 2 litre vw kombi! it fanged everywhere!

Jaime, expect to pay decent cash for a Combi. Parts are hard to find these days and owning one is like owning a yacht. There is always something to do to them! So, unless you have an inclination for working on cars or have a family member that will happily do it for you, I wouldn't go down that road.

The 80s vans are great to drive, feel solid on the road and won't go like stink, but will cruise at 110km/hr quite happily. Thirsty on fuel as well.

Mine cost £3500, and its not perfect. However, since I bought it the market has dried up so I could probably sell it for £4500. People just buy them and spend another £10000 on them doing them up.

Awesome examples sell over here for about £10k, but the market is big here as their small size make them great for getting around the country roads and lanes of Devon and Cornwall. There is even a camper conversion called the Devon so you can see where they were made for!

I believe there is quite a good market in bringing Aussie VW vans to the UK as you can get them for cheap in Aus, and sell them for more in the UK. Because Australia has a drier climate, and doesn't have to salt the roads, they tend to be pretty rust free.

after many, many, many,. many, years driving one thousand dollar sh1tters around, i gots me self a brand spanker.... a suzuki apv.... tiny little five door two seat van... you see 'em everywhere in indo, cheap as nearly free brand new, and nothing to techno in the engine department, can still easily do all fuel saving modifications... the last heap i had, a 1988 toyota hi-ace, i bought for a thousand, went everywhere in it, had it for four years, worked on two cylinders before it warmed up enough for the other two, watched the taco turn over the eight hundred thousand mark and sold it out of rego with a pink slip for six hundred bucks! imho, anyone who does not have little ones to transport, or does not have to do the hour plus commute, is a fool to spend more than twenty large on a car...

In my opinion, a toyota 4x4 single cab 3.0ltr Diesel with tray liner and cover for the back. Went everywhere, and plenty of room to sleep in the back with all your equipment, plus everyone else's. Two in the front (squeeze 3) stops it turning into a taxi also. Especially when you're away with a group, you're more reliant on just yourself and a mate, rather than having to hang around because 5 people need to sort their stuff out before needing a lift...
Very fuel efficient too. Cost me $1600, two years later sold it for $1400. Not bad - these hold their value very well if you look after them.

NOT that there's anything wrong with a Bongo Van but.....

Actually there's not, apparently they're all Pajero running gear ( make of that what you will ) the only thing is take the odometer reading with a grain of salt.

I've heard from mates in the know that, being a import, dodgey things happen out at sea and cars reading 50 000kms on the clock have spark plugs in them that look like they've done at least 150 000kms.

Buyer beware. Get an RAC or similar check before handing over any cash

Delica is the go, the bit about the od is crap, ive imported several cars in the past with no problems.its more a story of "i herd this happen to a bloke who knows this guy. the delica has a great turbo diesel versions, pajero parts so no problems with maintenance (its the pajero chassis with a van body on top) but cheaper (go imports!) and loads of space, there are some campers around too. excellent 4x4 capacity etc, push button lock diffs blah blah blah... i had a look at one and ws considering a jeep also. the jeep is a piece of @#$.

yeah ok. To put you all straight, the Deli is on a Mitsubishi Trition chassis with the 2.8 TD engine found in both the Pajero (ha, I heard that Pajero is spanish for wnaker, true, dunno) and the triton. The auto box is similar to the Pajero, but not identical. The series 1 (like in the photo have injector pump issues with a seal that ****sup with our low sulphur diesel, repair cost $1500 ish, series 2 - indicators in bumper bar - don't have the issue) Check out www.delicaclub.com.au
I was going to buy one but to exxy and my life is not about paying the bank money.

Timomo - Hilux parts?? It's a mitsubishi you peanut.

In the last 15 years i have never spent more than $2k on a car. Just buy the manual, and get on the forums to solve any problems. Save your cash for kiting gear, it's much better having tons of kite gear than a shiny thing you wont take on the beach.

Why would you lower a kombi??

Never did understand reducing a vehicles ride height, if you want a firmer ride, surely hadrer springs is a better way to go??

Nice rig though.

You have never driven a kombi allong a windy highway have you? one minute your in one lane the next the other....unless i changed it over to independant then stiff springs are not an option...maybe? i dunno i just think it looks good! at least i can stay in one lane now....
