ok - after 8 years of kiting - im not bored but live in melbourne and it kind of sucks to kite here except for jan - march.

lately I have been thinking how much fun a jet ski would be on the glassy bay.....

could even wakeboard from it!

all comments would be invited :)

I suspect you would have been better off advising the forum you are a kiddie fiddler.

The comments would be more sympathetic.

Yep, it would be awesome fun, during all 3 days in the year that you don't get chop... and winds...

Jet skis are fun for about 15 minutes.

You can wakeboard behind them, but they're not wakeboard boats so they suck (too small wake, too low tow position)

You can crack open the throttle and do well over 100 kph. That's scary fun at first then boring after 5 minutes.

You can bash around and do turns off the chop. Also fun for 5 minutes.

Good things ... some people use them as diving and fishing platforms. Relatively easy to store and launch. Relatively quick to get where you're going. Not very comfortable or safe.

I believe it is fun to tow kiddies around in inflatable toys. You could get into trouble doing that, especially if you don;t have your own kids.

I am surprised that you think it sucks in Melbourne to kite except for jan-march. Have you tried looking out the window recently? Howling northerlies at Rosebud? Easterlies at <secret spot>? Southerlies most places? What have you been up to while everybody else is kiting?

Hey! I agree with everyone that jetskis get boring after a day but tow in surfing never gets old! I'm not talking about chasing massive waves but whipping into
Two foot slop with mates is great fun and will improve your kite surfing heaps. also they open up many different options (well in wa they do). But if you dont surf just buy heroin.

I think I know where that <secret spot> is and I've been meaning to try it when it's easterly... Rad to the max forecast for this weekend though!

Jet skis are too limited in functionality, and pricey too.
Boring by yourself ... you really need friends going out with you on their jetskis.

Like most things its more fun with more ppl. involved.
You'd get better value out of a boat - fish - ski - wake - cruise .

hey mate , i was the same wanted somthing for flat days, problem is this tree hugger goverment wont let you ride them anywhere the best thing to use it for would be tow ins and having someone on the back filming kiting, but there is a dick load of rules about how close you can be to people. mine is fun but it also sits in the shed 11 months of the year, my advice unless ur hell keen on buying one just rent one in the summer for a few hours

This is why there are a "dick load of rules" about riding them close to people. We had loads of the dickheads riding like maniacs close to shore. This was the result.

if there's one topic that reduces me to an inarticulate ball of hate, it is this one. the best i can probably do is an unpunctuated stream of invective, so i'll give it a whirl:

noisy selfish stinky megalomaniacal threatening deluded ridiculous sense of entitlement obnoxious oxygen-theiving douchebaggerising monotonous unskilled tool d1ckwad ... and i'm done

... well i thought i was ...

and the use of the occasional rescue example to legitimise the stupidity and offensiveness of the other 99.99% of stinkboaters is flat out ridiculous. to work wal's comparison; it's like saying that the catholic church's record on child abuse isn't so bad because occasionally they gave the kids lollies.

Most marine vehicles described as jet skis these days are actually jet boats. Just because they have handle bars does not mean they are skis. There is little chance of falling off or damaging yourself on your supercharged 1300cc 4-seater, even if it does 130 km/h. Get a standup, or one of the old smaller wave skis that are next to impossible to balance on at rest - that is a proper jet ski and heaps of fun. Just don't be too much of a water bogan.

If you want to do tow-ins and rescues, fair enough, get a jet boat as above.

If you want to fish/dive get a tinnie or a kayak.

^^ I know what you mean about the old 'hard to balance' skis. I tried to have some 'fun' with an ex-girlfriend on one of these. found it impossible and had to pull into a quiet section of the shore

They put a film of oil on the water for us to drink.

The oil also helps lubricate the deck of our surfboards.

They create chop at the best showing off spots on the water - that's kiting territory.
