Yea i'd second that, most of the guys in my area use surfboards strapless not dedicated kitesurf boards, and theres some real talented riders around,if you want to ride strapped though your better off with a dedicated kitesurf board cos most strapped riders like to boost and its hard to get a surfboard thats strong enough.
Tradeoff's don't you love'm.
for my money a good surfboard can be fine for kiting if you accept that when you go boosting on it then your chances of snapping increase dramatically (I'm assuming here that you fitness level, weight etc. matches the dimensions of your kiteboard also). other option is to start building in the srength and durability of production kite boards and then you invariably add weigh, reduce flex, blah, blah, .... (insert whatever other tradeoff you wish to add here) and then they don't feel like surfboards anymore.
There is a reason why after all these years and countless new construction techniques etc, etc. that surfboards are still (mostly) polyurethane blanks and polyester resin.
For me kitesurfboards for kiting, surfboards for surfing.
