Amazing how many spectators appear to be there.

However I'm more impressed with a ramp design that allows a board with a large fin to go over it.

only once kiting becomes as boring as windsurfing apparently...My God that was lame..quadruple fist pumps for a flat water one eighty...are they stuck that far back? the only thing remotely watchable was the wakestyle ramps and thats just kiting anyway... I only watched the first two minutes(it was all I could bear) but if any windsurfer has any decent argument as to why such an obscene amount of time and money was wasted on building this venue and staging thhis event id sure like to hear it...

Because Windsurfers can and Kitesurfers cannot.

ahm, that was pretty old footage. they actually got better in the indoor...looks like the first event. Pretty hard to do stuff with gusty wind from the fans. Look at some old kiting footage and see how lame/ ghey that is.

Remember seeing that in the early 90's and thought it was the gayest thing I'd seen at that time.......

I'm afraid 20 years later I still view this as the gayest thing I've seen .

If anyone try's doing that with kitesurfing they need an uppercut.

The 2004 event was a nostalgic re-staging of the indoor event that ran from 1990 to 1997.
Reasons? If you can stage it and its so popular you make money from it then its not a waste of money.

Fortunately, the physical characteristics of a kite rig and the space required to fly them in, pretty much precludes any sort of event like this being set up for kiters. Windsurfers can get away with a bank of fans at water level, we would need a 20+ metre high bank of the things, plus extra for any air time to make it feasible.

As to IKW777's post, there are plenty of jaw dropping videos of kite surfers in waves in nuking conditions in the Canary Islands. I am looking forward to the day when windsurfers can complete their aerials and not smash down into the water, but hit it at speed and go straight in to another trick.

There are a few jumps which will probably be landed planing on a regular basis in the future. Push loop and double forward loop have been landed planing.
They drop over 50' in some of the backloops and maybe even stalled forwards, but to get that high you have to be going pretty vertical. Seems more impressive to me to be able to control the board in 50 to 60 knots and spear the water at the correct angle from that height without wrecking your ankles.

They are working on landing planing and getting more flow.
