The FCS Bucket hat or cap are the way to go.

I know both Airborne Kitesurfing and Windforce Watersports have them available in Perth.

The Peak brand surf hat or cap is designed for the job, has a well designed chin strap.

Available online or in any KP store.

^^^ the strap on that hat sucks balls.

the clip catches hair and skin and will rub your neck raw after a couple of hours.

the best ones have a one piece velcro strap, a hell of a lot more adjustment and a whole heap more comfortable

Definately recommend the Peak surf hat the only hat that does the job . Tried all the cheapo ones , putting my own strap on etc but the brims fold up after a while.

I second that.

The last thing is that you want other kiters to find out you actually thought the jump you did was big.

Billabong does a good one. O'Neill used to do a good one but the last one of theirs I saw was crap.

As a Ranga I've used a cowboy type hat from Lowes for the last couple of years. its not designed for kiting But it gives good coverage and works really well for me. costs about $25 and I"ve had mine for about 18 months broke last session as did my board

Its the fauna brown one with the wire running around the rim and the venting in the top. Similar to the type that Queensland sheriffs wear

The wire In the rim tends to push the upwind rim up, so I can see where i"m going. The plastic wire like Venting in the top of the hat lets water flow through so when I wipe out it does not strangle me
The best thing is the brown rope and ball with a spring stopper on it. I slide the stopper ball all the way to the hat put the rope around my neck like a noose slide the ball to the bottom of my neck at the back. Put on the hat. Pull the rope tight from the back of the neck and slide the stopper ball all the way to the base off the skull where the spine goes into the skull be careful of your hair.

There is a slight possibility that the hat could strangle me but that's a risk I'm willing to take. Like people with surf leashes to there strapless surfboards having the board shooting back at the rider, only much less likely to happen.

ocean earth surf hat
I use the wide brimmed hat, the front of the brim is stiff so it dosen't fold up in the wind. Its comfy and works a treat!

yeah look all jokes aside Bunnings straw hats kick arse .$5 bucks and I reckon you could tell em home hardware hats are $4.50 and you'll get it for $4.50 less 10%.
The tightener thing is **** and will break after 5 mins but that's eneough time to figure the right length on the string that goes around your neck to keep it from blowing off .Maybe if your lookin for a better stopper go for ian's lowes giggle hat But they look pretty bloody stupid quite frankly .The bunnings straw hat is bloody kick arse cool and you'll get legendery status as a kiter if your riding is up to it. Just look at that top hat guy in the states .Do a google search and there are bloody pages of im .
When you **** up it doesn't turn into a useless soggy rag like the lowes hat and when you're riding the wind tends to blow through it

Yep I second that, anyone that knows me knows that I hardly ever kite without my white ocean & earth surf hat.....Im def no fashion stakes winner but I couldn't care less, I've had far to much sun already in my life and will do anything I can to cover up.
The first one I had lasted two seasons before falling apart at the seams, I then purchased a peak hat and promptly lost it after a big wipeout on about my second session with it (I think I can put that down to operator error rather than any fault of the hat) anyway I have since purchased another O&E one and it just feel right for me.
They even have a piece of mesh cloth over your ears that gives a bit of extra sun protection and IMO could possibly help avoid an eardrum rupture in the event of a heavy crash.
Plus wearing a hat with a chin strap helps keep the sunnies on.

I reckon you will know the answer to that in 30 years SB.
I never wore a hat in the 30 or so years that I surfed before taking up kiting, it wasn't cool and probably still isn't, but hey neither am I.

P.S. I think that multi coloured one with the propeller that Beersy posted would look good with your mankini

Goodtime in the 'Gabba have great hats. They were giving them away with any purchase as a promo last year - don't know if they are still doing so. I guess you can buy them. Stiff peak in the brim & a good strap.
