I was surfing a few years back, and there was a massive black cloud coming closer dishing out some serious lightning. Getting closer and closer. And thought should probably leave now.
On the way home (on my pushbike, in the rain) that cloud turned into a water spout on the other side of the sand dunes.
Wish i ad gotten to see that. Lousy bike...

I heard a really, really loud bang right out front of my house yesterday and I got scared. I think it was a cars exhaust pipe backfiring.

Great pix. Howz that cloud in the 2nd shot. We were kiting an hour before it hit. A yachty mate of mine was telling me the worst experience of his life, was trying to outrun a storm (unsuccessfully) like the one that hit here yesterday.

When I was 15 we had just gotten home from town and a large electrical storm was centred right over our house, which is probably at the highest elevation of any house for a 40km radius. I was walking along the veranda, a fair bit of water blowing in on me, when for the first time ever I heard the lightning before I saw the flash. That's how I remember it anyway, it all happened so fast. The bang seemed to register first, then the bright flash, followed by a dark flash as I felt voltage smash through my entire body.

It felt like being hit by five baseball bats at once, one in each knee, one in each elbow and one in the chest. I crumpled to the ground stunned, and as I regained movement I immediately thought about my sisters and mother. If it had hit everyone in the house as hard they might not have recovered so well, so I got up as fast as I could and raced inside to check on them. No-one else had felt anything, I was the only one.

I got shocks from lightning twice more in that house, once through the kitchen tap as I was filling a glass of water, and once through the ground as I stood on a wet laundry floor. We've had more of our fair share of melted transformers too, lightning strikes on the powerlines.

Story on this subject as I have a goodie, When I was working in Zanzibar years ago we were having breakfast on the beach in our resort and just gas bagging and drinking coffee, and ther's this thunder storm lightening etc and raining like a mother.
Anyway next thing this lighening bolt hits the UHF repeater tower and arcs right through it , then next thing this almighty bang and lightening comes out of a power socket!!! Hits this random guy sitting down having breakie with his mrs, and boots him off his seat right across the room in front of us!!!!
I'm like holy F..... pretty much the same time this African local goes to touch the urn for a cuppa and boot he yells insanely drops his cuppa and legs it off screaming into the jungle.
We all jump up go to the guy like expecting him to be dead!!
And he just looks up and says to everyone " wow now I'm awake I don't need a coffee after all"
We are like "no way!!!"
But yes way he got up to tell the story and carry on like nothing happened.
Also apparently the lads in the dive office where the uhf tower is on had to jump up on the bench as there was lightening skitzing all over the floor in the office like in the movies or something for a time afterwards!!
So yea I managed to watch a dude struck by lighening and survive a highlight of my OE actually.

Its a replacement firmware that loads on certain Canon cameras .. its not a permanent change to the firmware so no warranty problems etc. Its called CHDK (Canon Hackers Development Kit) and allows you to change virtually any setting on the camera, including increasing the shutter time to 1/25,000th of a second, saving in RAW format and other cool stuff like scripts. It basically unlocks hidden settings on the camera and turns a $150 camera into one with features found on a $2,000 camera.

One of the scripts turns the camera's Optical sensor into a motion detector so when it senses movement (or a lightning flash), it triggers the shutter. Checkout this url:

Can I count my experiences as three times hit? Considering the distance from the laundry to the kitchen and on to the veranda, they were all within 10m of each other too.

Most dslrs have these features already (RAW, fast shutter etc) but you miss out on the scripting ... I think the chdk forum members are trying to get it to work on dslrs

I was driving with my girlfriend and the car got hit, heard a huge thud all through my body and then white light filled my vision, literally all I could see was white. Lucky I didn't have an accident as I was a bit dazed/shocked for about 5 seconds after.

Then there's the times landing jumps, kiting in an electrical storm. Shocking and painful best describe it. The more hang time the more pain when you land, and the wonderful blue fire between your hands and the bar :-/ I stopped jumping when I worked out what was happening, then I stop kiting when some bolts started dropping.
