Have done a search here and on the google-machine but hard to find much good info. Any tips for a kite trip to Thailand? Have a baby and the missus and a group of non-kiters, so would like somewhere that isn't totally geared around kiting if possible.

Looking at going mid next year.

Any tips greatly appreciated!

Go for a holiday, not for a kite would be my advice. Pathetic winds and beaches. If you're desperate, the Hua Hin area would suit your needs.

Search their archives
They had an event just before xmas in 2013
They also had an event in 2012 at a different time and location

Read the report on the events will give an idea of the wind and locations ;)

I guess these places should be in reasonable wind areas to

Also

chalong bay.

I also stayed at a place called lone island.
www.baanmai.com/en/index.php
Wicked little island about 15 mins boat away from phuket. Only 1 hotel on the island. Awsome for peace and quiet but easy to jump on the hotels boat and go to phuket. Anyway while i was there some guy turned up with a kite and was out kiting. Wind wasnt very strong but it may be some times.

I lived in Thailand for 8 years, kited 4 of them. Spent a lot of time waiting for wind. Most of the time I was in Koh Samui which is pretty marginal. I also found most of the expats that ran kitesurfing clubs total tools.

Spent some time in Jom Tein Beach, there were 2 clubs there when I was living there both run by Australian who were only after money, probably best to avoid them.

South Thailand was awesome, but no wind.

Everyone will tell you about Hui Hin, but you have to be lucky to get wind and the place is a dive filled with sex tourists and pissed off expats.

Great cable ski park in Bankok,

Go to Mui Ne if you can. I have not been there but a mate travels there every year and raves about the place

I was staying in the railay beach area for 3 weeks in aug and didn't take a kite. was kicking myself, every day at 1pm it blue 20knots till bout 4pm and then dropped right out agen. would have been awesome, BUT it would have been a pain lugging all the gear around!

I'd say most of the locations that have been listed above will not apply to you if your be heading over mid year during the south west season.
Those locations are ok if your going around dec-march.

Sounds like railay may have some decent wind for mid year.

Also in rayong they get reliable wind but its lightest... 12 - 18 knts.. still fun tho.. check out this vid
