Hi All

Ive been riding a surfboard with straps lately and its awesome fun.

I do however have problems changing direction. What ive been doing is stopping altogether getting in the water turning the board around and restarting.

The board is a home made job with 2 straps at the front and a deck grip at the back so i find it hard to swap from left foot in the strap to right foot in the strap.

Any tips or ideas would be great

1. Get rid of the straps
2. Understand the physics behind the jingo jango
3. practise the jingo jango
4. replace the straps if you really need to
5. give way to kiters using wax instead of straps when kiting in waves.

you can just ride toeside al l the time - no need to jybe - but it is a good tip to be able to rise switch if you have to do a long up wind tack

Jingo Jango for me

Go out heel side, slowly take you front foot out the strap (if strapless ignore) then place it a little further back and turn foot 180 (so kinda inside out, thigh is facing out) then bring kite to twelve and ride down wind. quickly bring back foot infront of your new back foot(180 turned front foot).

You should be standing toe side now. then postion feet (back in normal position, ie in straps / on foot pad) and do heel side carve.

Let kite turn first before you turn.

Hope makes sense.

The jingo jango explained(note: this is just the name i made for it). *

Most poleys are able to jingo jango with ease as are ballroom dancers and some skateboarders and in most cases yachties could explain it to you. So what is it?

Its a combination of things, most commonly refered to as a jibe with a shuffle, coming about and a revert but involves a little bit more or less depending on where the wave is and when you do the dance.

For example: Wind is coming over your left shoulder as you head out to sea left foot forward, heelside.

1. The Jingo.

You want to head back into shore AFTER you have got past the breakers(or there are no breakers). Simple, send the kite back from whence it came and as it starts through the middle of the NEW power zone do a toeside carve. Just as you finish the carve and you have sufficient power then push the bar away slightly. At precisely(not a second before or after) you do this, move your rear foot just behind your front RIGHT on the EDGE of the board,( this will hold you against your kite and limit the amount of times you do a forward dive which is good footage but not great for you face). At this stage you are still riding toeside with your front foot(a.k.a your left foot) in the middle of the board and your right foot(yes the back one) behind it, but on the edge. Keeping it on(or towards) the edge is muy importante unless you are in the jingo jango bloopers competetion then just put it anywhere you please.

Leave your back foot(right) where it is and move your left foot to the back of the board, anywhere will do, but towards the edge is better. if you have managed all of this and are going forwards and not titanic-cing then re-adjust your feet to their prefferred spot, forwards/backwards/side etc depending on wind and wave conditions and desired speed.

2. The Jango
You want to head back into shore before the breakers(or you want to look cool). A little less simple, push the bar away slightly keeping the kite fairly high, but not to high, bear slightly downwind, apply pressure(ie slightly stall) to the back of the board and do the two step/jango/switcheroo. Replace your front foot with your back foot and vice versa. i.e. jump and switch your feet around. Send your kite back from whence it came and there you go.

Easy? hahahahah, the front section of my board that has perfect shaped indents of my head might argue. why? well i forgot to mention the wave heading towards you that you want to "hit" just after you finish the jango, get it right and oh so sweet, get it wrong and ..well.. .ow!

Both are about timing and lots and lots of practise. Oh, and you need to learn natural to goofy and goofy to natural as well. I still think its easier WITHOUT straps to learn, but if you are an ex-poley you might disagree. Also when kiting in waves on a surfboard you are constantly moving your feet around, i personally find the straps get in the way, but to each their own, just have fun.

* forget everything i have said above, harden up and just do a bl**dy jibe and swap your feet at the same time.

Nice explanation, I only ever do that jybe when setting up for a wave, but you are right if you can ditch the straps, it is easier to do the whole jinga jangy thing.

But riding over big surf can be a bit more challenging as nothing to kepp you and board attached.

Preference is everything

Strapless is what all the cool kids are doing

thanks heaps for the explanation i had to read it about 5 times to make sure i understand it
will try next time im out and i agree with both of you about not having straps but as im still learning it makes it heaps easier to stay on the board as the water is pretty rough
i guess i just have to practice more looks like ill be using up some sick days

using straps in this is for wimps and goats,

Dude loose the two front straps and put one front and rear, I space mine with one forward of the centre and one in front of the fins, if you put them too far back you cant use the straps going out as you bog and stall the board.

To jibe you just bring your back foot forward befor you start the turn, this keeps your speed up in the turn and you dont stall the board. Bring your foot up to the middle of the board, start the turn, bring the kite around to keep it powered and as the kite moved in the other direction then move you front foot back, at the same time twist on the old back foot to change its orientation. You need to get throught the death wobbles section first as the board depowers ( dead down wind) half way throught he turn, a bit of practice and its pretty straight forward.
