I got myself an awesome new North Pro-Series surf board thanks to Darren at AKS but are having numerous debates with my hubby about using the straps. He hid the straps from me and said I had to go strapless ;)

I went out yesterday and did a fun downwinder but I felt like a gumby without straps. Got worked a few times because I cant turn like im used to. I know that I will get used to it eventually but is it really worth the effort when i can just go out with straps and have a great time..

Whats your view on this!!!!!

Cheers

stick at it without straps. You will have a couple of kooky months but after that everything will just start to flow. Well worth the effort. nothing you cant do without staps!

plus yesterday was epic between city and brighton. Great day to break a new board in!

Maybe start strapped in bigger surf and strappless in small surf untill you feel more confident. Whoever has the most fun wins!

Straps are sooooo uncool.
You will get more attention from the gay dudes at the beach though, whatever floats ya boat...

"is it really worth the effort "

learning becomes the fun bit

the deal is you can put your feet backwards and forwards (where they are best placed/most comfortable) on the board depending if you are cruising, hitting a wave, whatever is best for what u are doing which you cant with straps, it is easier to turn around, cheaper and more fun in most situations that dont involved huge choppy waves or long distance choppy runs where you gotta keep high speed up.

Try this: start off with straps and then after a while take them off. see if you can still do every thing you were doing with out the straps.

Straps lets you do more radical turns and more turns in general, if you want to be a surfer with a kite leave the straps at home.

even just use the front one.

it helps with getting out thru whitewater if your new to it all.
by having your back foot loose it gives you a more surfy feel and means you can move your foot depending on what your doing.

Straps just get in the way.
When going over the white water SLOW DOWN
and bend the knees.

You can already ride strapped, so why not learn to ride strapless, it won't take long, then you can decide if you want to go back to straps or not.

Some do, some don't, there is no right way, it's whatever feels right for you.

I ride unstrapped 99% of the time but still have a strapped board I use occasionally.

^^^ maturing because a girl wrote it. Of course.

Ive seen all of us "locals" be more patient towards girls, barzillian girls and euro girls than other male blow ins..

For god sake were not that racist. But sexist...????

Bite the bullet, you have to go 2 steps back before you can go 3 forward. Keep the staps though, mast high and up isn't worth stuffing up, you don't see tow in guys strapless

Most girl/girl stuff is usually strapped, yet unstrapped gives you more freedom.

Most guys are happy with whats between their feet and would go unstrapped for more pleasure.

I think not, they can stay in the carpark peeing there pants while i flick the kite and jump over them double overheads screaming through the break at mach 2 to get out the back and smash another one

I feel there is a misunderstanding, there is Surfing with a kite and there is Kitesurfing .......

Both are valid sports in there own right, having done both I know what floats my boat

P.S.
Inflatable sharks have terrible upwind ability but get lots of laughs, nice and floaty on the shore breaks thou

I pretty sure it's been said before but....

Kiting with straps on a surfboard = kiteboarding

Kiting with no straps on a surfboard = kitesurfing

Surfing with no kite at all = SURFING

Pretty simply really!

Strapless. We know you are a hotshot on a twinnie.Simply accept it as a new fun challenge and learning curve on a S.B...Enjoy the ride, you're not alone, there's plenty of gumbys on surfboards.

"SLOW DOWN", my point exactly, I love punching through waves on my way out at pace and I looooove boosting

No surfing session is complete without a few decent boost off the ramp.
That is why I love straps.

Oh, before 50 people reply that you can boost while holding the rail, I have seen it in vids but actually never saw anyone sticking one down at Scarb so it is out of the league for 99.8% of people out there.

Just stick your front strap on loosely (so you can still move your back foot around) for a couple of sessions till you are comfy ramping waves and bumps ...then chuck it in the bin!
